I am having real problems finding a hotel worth staying at in Sydney!

I am off to NZ for ~18days, but on the way home am stopping off in Sydney for 4nights. NZ is going to be 18days of sleeping in hostels and driving around, so i think i will be well in need of some luxury smile

If you have been to Sydney, which area of the city would you suggest staying in? (keeping in mind my short stay), and is there a hotel you would recommend? I am young, and will be on my own, so nowhere with too many families please! I am also wanting a modern design hotel, which is the point where it becomes more difficult, as Sydney doesn't seem to really do this! frown

Please help!

Thanks

Are you after a single room and roughly what is your budget?

I'd recommend either staying in the Inner East or somewhere very close to the harbour if you're after something a bit more luxurious than a backpacker area smile

I used to live in Sydney and can highly recommend it smile

We stayed at the Marriot -Sydney Harbour Circular Quay.Hope you are doing the bridge climb, the twilight one is sensational also try Wolfies resturant down by the Harbour.
Hope You enjoy NZ there is so much to see and do there. Watch your speed though -- 2 fines we had! frown

I am going to be REALLY picky about the hotel i go for, but any advice would be great smile One more thing... i do not want to be anywhere near a great big chain monstrosity!

The Establishment looks perfect, but it's £180/night, which is too much really frown

How about the Blacket in the City or Kirketon in Darlinghurst, just in the inner west? smile

Sydney is shockingly expensive. We stayed at the Observatory a year ago. It was very good, but unbelievably expensive.

Novotel doesn't fit my requirements though smile

One option is the Diamant, but i worry that it's a bit far out, and not in the best area(!) (Kings Cross).

Second the proposal of Darling Harbour. Can't remember the name of the hotel we stayed in, but it overlooked the Japanese Garden. City monorail was within easy reach, as was the rest of the Darling Harbour facilities.

I'd say Darling Harbour is one of the best locations to stay. Very central and plenty of nice bars/restaurants etc although some of these are eye-wateringly costly!

I was recommended the Intercontinental by a fellow PH'er when I asked a couple of Years back.
I stayed there for a week and would definately recommend it.

Everything walking distance or a ferry so no trains or taxis

I stayed there late last year, it was a bit disappointing - nothing wrong but nothing special, the room was quite small, the food nothing wonderful and Woolloomooloo is a bit out of the way

My issue at the moment is, that anything in Darling Harbour or close by is just going to be a horrible chain hotel frown Which is something that i will only go for if i can't find anything else!

Surely there must be something smaller and cooler around Darling Harbour!

Darling Harbour is next to a convention centre so is targetted towards business travellers.

Check out the Vibe Hotel chain. One on Goulbourn st in the city, one in rushcutters bay in the west and another one on the north shore. It is a hotel chain but it is a very small hotel chain.

ALso have a look at Marque Sydney

http://www.wotif.com usually has some good deals as well.
