I've decided to holiday in the UK this year and wales seems to have a lot going for it. Can anyone recommend me a good town to stay in (or even recommend some accomodation) in North wales ?. Family of 4 (kids age 9 and 11) so need 2 rooms, self catering (cottages or similar). Ideally want a beach close by as the kids are very active outdoors types.

Also can anyone recommend things to do ? I've found the slate caverns, there is snowdon of course and I was thinking of maybe some mountain biking but what else is there ?

Any info appreciated

Oh and being as we have the credit crunch I want to keep the cost down, will I get anything decent for £600/week at the end of July/beginning of aug or do I need to up the budget a bit ?

Cheers

I have just returned from a few days in Barmouth at a small family run hotel nerd.....lovely town, plenty to do round about, Harlech Castle, Portmeirion, Ffestiniog Slate mines, Snowdonia etc....I would imagine it's a bit grim in the winter though........yikes

Hey there,

There is a 'Haven' caravan park thingy between Porthmadog & Pwllheli, not sure how much but would be a good base.

As for things to do...In addition the the previous mentioned there the Dinorwig power station tour (Llanberis), an outdoorsy place called Plas Y Brenin thats between Llanberis & Betws Y Coed. Plas Menai near Caernarfon is a water sports centre, not sure if they do single day things but worth a look, Abersoch has a decent beach and a plas called Glasfrin Parc not far from Pwllheli has go-karting, quad biking, archery etc. Otherwise there are no doubt a good few things i've missed but if all else fails always good bike rides to be had.

Nefyn/Morfa Nefyn are good places and might be worth a look?

I personally think you'll struggle to find accommodation for that period though, especially within budget.

Llandudno (sp) for the day, recently went to see the copper mines on great orme, get there early and you can take the cable car down to near the pier..

There is an Aquarium (see zoo, they call it) on Angelsey (sp) was quite good, worth a look if its raining I found.

Don't forget the national slate museum which is free to get in, though may be dull for kids...

Shell Island has some nice beaches, costs 5 pounds to get in over the causeway (seemed open all day in June).

Go to a local Tesco, one I went to had a few stands of leaflets of things to do.. then you are sorted.
