I've had a e46 318 coup for a month now and many people have told me i should have got the 325. Lots more power and almost the same mpg, i get 36mpg and 42mpg if i tried hard on my 38 daily drive to work and back including a fair stretch on the A5. I want something which i can acheive near enough mpg and i can get a bit more exceitment every time i put my foot down a bit.

Think you will be stuggling to get that sort of MPG out of a 6 cylinder. I had an E46 328Ci, averaged about 28-30mpg from memory doing lots of motorway driving (prob 80 per cent). Most 6cyls seem to sit somewhere between 27 and 31 depending on the driving you do, and how you drive it.How many miles per year do you drive? Working on the basis of 12,000 miles per year I calculate the figures to be
£2121 pa @ 28mpg @ 1.10 per litre (6cyl)
£1620 pa @ 36mpg @ 1.10 per litre (4cyl)
£500.00 per year difference, or £41.00 per month. Servicing will be similar. Things like insurance and tyres may be more depending on which model you opt for. Is it worth the extra to you?

I've had an e46 325ci for the last year. My average on a 25 mile round trip each day is 29mpg. I can get slightly over that on long m/way journeys, but normally around the 30 mark.
You're probably getting a better average in your current though, but it depends how much you want that extra grunt and a nice smooth 6cyl.. Have to admit, i do like the grumble mine has when im getting through the revs in each gear on some of the B roads on the way home... I'm probably not helping

Just done a 300 mile run in my 530i Auto.
4 heavy people on board, full boot, air con on full, sitting 80ish averaged 33.6mpg - A true 33mpg.
That, is some 3 or 4mpg better than my old Cooper S in similar circumstances.
Get a 6cyl and you will find on longer runs little in the economy - around town I would guess quite a bit worse.
I would say on a long run 6cyl (35mpg) 4cyl (35mpg)
Around town 6cyl (22-25mpg) 4cyl (26-28mpg)
That of course is just my guess.

I have a 2001 E46 320i auto, 2.2 6 cylinder. Just returned from a 4 week touring holiday in France, total mileage 2500 miles. Using auto-routes, N and D roads the car returned 35.3 miles per gallon, which I think was pretty good considering it was carrying 2 adults and our luggage for 4 weeks. Oh and that includes 2 hours to cover 5 miles on the Paris peripherique.

I've also got a 320i auto (2003) with 110,000 miles on the clock. I regularly do a 200 mile round trip from here in Dorset, to the office in London and back - mostly motorways at 70ish, with a few fast A-roads at either end.Being an auto, the MPG seems to be very sensitive to how smooth you drive it. Put it in sport mode around town and listen to that lovely 6 cylinder symphony, and you can quite quickly head towards the low 20s!
But driving up the motorway to work, I'm not in any rush, and I've yet to see less than 37mpg on the return journey. One particularly good day, the OBC showed 40mpg by the time I got home :-)

My 330 is surprisingly economical. On a long motorway cruise, being reasonably gentle with not too many heavy footed overtaking manoevres, not too many hard slip road and roundabout exits, looking far ahead and easing off early, rather than braking late, and it can easily be 36mpg. I even got a bit higher than this once when I experimentally went without A/C for the whole journey: 37.1mpg.
In the past I have reconciled the computer with the old fashioned fill-up measuring technique and found it to be accurate.
That's with good petrol btw. I'd never touch ordinary unleaded.

Totally concur with you and the Cooper S comparison. Owning both it surprises me how poor the Cooper S is and how economical my 530i 'can' be. 4 heavy people on board, full boot, air con on full, sitting 80ish averaged 33.6mpg - A true 33mpg.

Without trying too hard my 530i (e39 2003) will achieve 32mpg. If I really try (or have it enforced on my on teh M1 widening average speed camera check) I can get over 37-38.
As with all economy questions though its often down to you. I can get 20mpg with a heavy right foot
