Hypothetical Scenario
Discussion
This is completely made up, and bares no resemblance to reality, thus if there are any issues with reality please overlook them.
Your seeking to employ someone and get four respondents to the resulting recruitment complain, your unsure as to which to employ so you devise a test, you give each of them an oldish 1.2 Vauxhall Corsa for the weekend and tell them you want the red callipers on the front on Monday. This is the only instruction; there is no mention of budget or method.
Monday morning brings four Corsa’s as below.
Potential Employee 1:
Has spent the Friday wondering that to do, he has no pervious experience of cars so spends his time researching using friends/internet and forms to figure out what to do. He decides despite no prior experience that painting is the cheapest and most sensible option, he reads up on removing the wheels and callipers and does his best to clean and paint them with Halfords finest red. All in all he has not done a bad job although it’s obvious it’s been painted at the side of the road.
Potential Employee 2:
Has spent the Friday wondering what to do, again he has no experience of cars, he decided that the best course of action is to employ someone who has. He took the car to someone who could and it’s had its callipers blasted and painted red to a professional standard.
Potential Employee 3:
Has spent Friday wondering what to do, again he has no experience of cars and after some searching around for red callipers discovered that Brembo do red ones and as a result has obtained and had fitted a Brembo brake conversion including red callipers.
Potential Employee 4:
Has spent Friday working out what to do, not knowing about cars after some research he has come to the conclusion that it is of no benefit to the function or performance of the car, and indeed it’s not particularly tasteful on an old Corsa. He’s arrived with the car the same as it was when he took it away, but has come prepared with documents to back up his decision to take no action.
Who would you employ and why???

Well, need more info, however number 2 - he has done what the employer asked and to a professional quality standard.
1 has done a shoddy job
3 has gone for most expensive option and may compromise the car (braking may be all fooked up, bias will be wrong for a start etc..)
4 hasn't done what you asked.
candidate number 5 would have asked the budget
In candidate 4s report, does it highlight poor spelling and grammar of his employers or is that a sackable offence?

Anyway, with such a vague brief I think all potential employees should look for a job with an employer that knows what he is doing

I wouldn't work for such a dick, unless of course the job involved painting callipers red.
I'd probably employ number 1.
He recognised this was a pointless exercise and achieved the objective as cheaply as possible duping the old duffer into thinking his will was done, his idea was far from being pointless, a waste of man hours and a waste of money.
The boss walks away happy and still feels superior.

I'd hedge towards number 2. The finish will be professional but the cost won't be the highest.
Number 1, for the effort and cheapness they get good marks but the product has to look good.
Number 3, Yes Brembo do pretty calipers but you have to put their value on an old corsa into perspective. (top marks for style though)
Number 4, Actually what did they do apart from follow their own personal taste which has no bearing on the task in hand. They failed to carry out your instructions.

Who would you employ and why???
Number2 If the company has no internal resources and requires someone to be able to build up a network of suppliers and service providers.
Number3 If the company requires the latest technology and fashion.
Number4 If the company is looking for someone to work in the accounts department.
I would also back this test up with a simple English test, but get someone else to write it for you!
