5W40 Oil for a Saggy

I'm after some oil for the Sag. I'm not wanting to start the debate over which spec is best as I'm happy with what I'm using, although I appreciate different owners use differeent oils.
The car had its 12k service a couple of thousand miles ago and I could do with a small top-up of oil. Mobil 1 5W40 fully synthetic was used at the time of the oil change. I've tried to get hold of some and its like rocking horse do-do to get hold of. I have only found 1 supplier in the UK who wants a fortune for postage making 1 litre of oil way too expensive.
I am now looking at other brands to use for a top up. Of the 5W40 oil users out there, what brands are people using and does it make a big difference to engine protection?
So far, in 5W40 spec I have found:
Halfords do their own 5W40 fully synthetic,
Carlube Triple R fully synthetic,
Castrol edge DIESEL - I have been told that I'm ok to use this as diesel oil just contains a few extra cleaning agents. Can anyone varify this please?
Are any of these oils any good and should I trust them in the sag?

In short, you can stick practically anything in there & it will be fine. Mobil 1 0W40 is widely available & will be more than fine - indeed arguably better than 5W40 even!
The 0 part of 0W40 means it is thinner at cold temperature (i.e. cold engine start) which is a good thing because it gets pumped around the engine much faster than say 10W40 or 15W40 which are much thicker at cold.
The 40 bit indicates the viscosity at operating temperature (or perhaps ,more accurately, the operating temperature range that's needed to thin the oil to a standard viscosity). Hence 0W40,5W40,10W40 & 15W40 are all basically the same once you get them warmed up.
Higher number grade oils are used in higher performance motors to cope with higher temperatures (i.e. xW50 & xW60 oils). With those it takes a higher opertaing temperature to thin them to optimum viscosity than it would a W40 oil.
Mobil 1's trick is that (alledgedly) it operates over a wider temperature range than most other 40W oils.

Many thansk for the replies. I have spoken to Opie oils and Oilman and I have been assured that the Castrol Edge 5W 40 diesel oil is absolutly fine to use and no better or worse than the mobil 1 that I was originally after. Fractionally more expensive but I can get hold of it easily enough.
