OK it had to happen sooner or later. I commute to work in the city from Southgate North London, yesterday cycling up harringay high road, in bus lane, a young lady came straight across and took me out (she was turning right into a car park)
Very luckly no broken bones, to be honest totally in shock at the time didn't really realise what I was doing, so police not called etc. Went to my local hospital later in the day xrays etc, i'm alright but today feel like i've gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson

Damage - Bike total right off, 3 week old carrera disc (had the old one 3 years!), £399 plus mudguards etc. Not a highly expensive bike but I liked it

Cycle helmet cracked £40(did it's job!)

Injured pride - Priceless!

So presume I just claim against the doozy bint's car insurance??

Not an expert, as i have never had to claim (just jinxed myself with that, no?). But make a note of everything that needs replaced - down to your jacket/shorts, get a bike shop to check your bike and them to give you something written to tell you it is knackered.

Try the forums at bikeradar for advice, there is a right and wrong way to go about doing it.

Certainly get her to make good your financial losses, let her chose insurers or own pocket...

(BTW if the helmet was a "Giro" they replace them at a very very good price)

I've been told that Specalised do the same - so might also be true for other makes

As there's been damage (to both property and person) then you need to report it to the Police.

Same procedure as if you were driving a car not a bike.

Plenty of advice already exists on here but the Search function needs to be working to access it!

The way I would deal with it is;
1. Contact the driver and let them know the extent of the damages (personal injuries and to property) and that you will be claiming against them.
2. Inform them that you will be reporting it to the Police.
3. Request their Insurance details.
4. Submit a claim copied to them against their insurance.

If they decide to settle the claim out of their own pocket then that's fine but you proceed with the insurance claim until you have the hard cash in you hand.

To be clear, I don't see this as anopportunity to make an easy couple of grand from a personal injury claim. You are entitled to be put back into the position you had been before their negligent acts or receive compensation in lieu.

Agree with all of this - PLEASE don't try to make a claim for injuries if you just have a few bruises (makes all of us cyclists look like greedy tossers), though I'd expect you to have your bike and helmet replaced, and any damaged clothing as well.

Thanks all for the replies

Not after making anything from the claim to be honest just want my bike and bits replaced. The way I look at it, it could have been me in the car, no one goes out in the morning looking to have an accident. She was turning right across the traffic and just didn't see me in the bus lane behind the vehicles(weather she should have nosed into the bus lane for a look is another matter, benifit of hindsight and all that)

The bint may well change her story when she finds out what the cost is.
These guys are bike savvy (CTCs own insurers)
