On a track of course

On a track of course... I am experiencing a strange vibration problem coming up the gearstick when approaching the red line in 5 gear.
All other gears are not a problem, but when in 5 at 6000 ish revs the gearstick vibrates so much its difficult to get hold of it to change up to top (it was vibrating so much it hurt my hand).
Any ideas?

6000 rpm in 5th will be close to the vehicle's maximum speed. The big fall in revs into 6th means the car probably starts to slow down. Assuming you have a standard NA LS2 VXR on standard gearing.
Sounds like propshaft balance. I can't see how the level of vibration you describe could be transmitted from inside the gearbox without destruction. The whole rear of the gearbox must be going mad. I suggest you check the gearbox mounting and propshaft fixing and rubber couplings.
You could jack the rear of the car up and run it up to speed and see if it happens again. Unloaded its all going to be a bit scary and you could really over speed things.
A mate of mine put his Sierra into 1st at 60 mph once. Didn't release the clutch but when he went back into 4th he had no drive. He had spun the clutch plate up to 12,000 rpm. The 4 X centrifugal force had disintegrated the lining...
