I'm doing coast-2-coast in a few weeks and need some new tyres. The route is 150 miles (we're doing over 3 days) - 50/50 on-road / off-road, with most of the off-road on cycleways/disused rail tracks etc.

However there are a few miles of tougher off-road sections as per link : http://www.c2c-guide.co.uk/offroad.htm

I want some tyres which will offer low rolling resistance for the road & easy off-road sections, but which won't wimp-out or puncture at first sign of the tougher off-road bits.

Looked at wiggle and chain-reaction but overwhelmed by choice, so any recommendations really appreciated

Budget - £30 for pair, maybe stretch to £40

None of that looks too bad, though clearly putting tyres on just for the proper off-road bits will slow you down hugely on the remainder.

Best compromise I can suggest are these Nokian Ultra Tour. They're wide enough to absorb bumps, fast rolling and have enough tread to deal with proper off-road use, albeit not as well as 100% off-road tyres.

A good alternative is the Schwalbe Marathon Cross.
