A diesel engine in a TVR? Surely not!

I just got back from a little jaunt and, sadly, it sounds like my earth-tremor-inducing Rover V8 has been replaced by nasty rattly diesel engine.
She sounds OK while gently cruising, but idling is distinctly rough and any time I put my foot down (as TVR owners tend to do), there is this god-awful rattley noise with a background tinkle. The rattle is distinctly diesel-like. The tinkle is quieter and sounds like a bit like loose tin.
I am presuming my top end is in dire need of some love and attention. Valves? Camshaft? Or could it be something else?
What is the best way to go about getting this sorted out?

I attended a drifting day at Silverstone about two years ago and after three donuts in the TVR, oil starvation caused a horrible engine rattle. I pulled over and left it to idle for a minute and the rattle faded, but ever since I have had a nagging feeling that the engine sound wasn't quite right. As is often the case, nobody else seemed to hear quite what I was hearing. Roll forward 18 months and I can definitely hear that the throaty roar has shades of VW Beatle in the background. You know that air-cooled farty sound?. Not nice. Today's final straw may have been the full throttle blat necessitated by having a Mini Cooper trying to climb into the boot. Or it may have have something to do with a nasty scrape I heard as a slowly (but not slowly enough) drove over a speed bump.
Any ideas?

Think positive, it could just be a bit of loose tin - there are plenty of them in and around the exhaust.
