Anyone planning a Spanish holiday and needing a hire car had better save up!
Prices seem to have rocketed - I was getting quotes of between €654 and €900+ for a Corsa for 19 days in August yikes

Eventually I have got an 'Economy' car for £437 and I am taking out an independent excess waiver annual policy for £43 - the car hire company wanted an additional £90 for this for just the rental duration.
For comparison I paid about £250 all in last year for a similar duration and a better car!

They always seem to increase their prices the closer you get to when you want it and will always be higher in peak season.

I have used Victoria Car Rentals and Gold Car in the past and had no problems, and booked this years through Economy Car Hire (who are a broker for Sol-Mar)

But those first quotes do seem very expensive.

I have used Victoria many times, their best quote is 642 Euro for a Chevrolet Matiz, Economy Car Hire - £618 for a Ford Ka!!

I considered hiring a small van instead but they are no cheaper irked

Try here. They seem quite cheap. A Ford Ka is £123 (150€) per week.
