Dipstick low and high level marks

OK, so roughly, what is the amount of oil required to go from the low point on the dipstick to the high point?

I'm guessing about a litre and just want to guage how much oil my engine is consuming. Gone about a quarter so far in 330 miles..

Most newish cars are 1 litre low to high.. Put in half a litre and go from ther, its better to be under than over..

Thanks yellowgriff, just as I thought. Looks like she's doing about 1200 miles to a litre on a fairly new (800 mile) engine.

I've just bought a 3yrs old Honda CRV - it's fitted with the 2.2 CDTi diesel engine and, as already mentioned, takes a litre of oil between the two marks

I was amazed to find that for such a modern engine, the handbook and dealership confirm that they usually do 600 miles to a litre of oil - that's worse than my Griff ever did!!!

Astonishly, with such a high oil consumption for a modern car, Honda didn't fit an oil warning light - they just recommend checking the oil every time you refuel!!!

600 mile a litre??!!!! Wow that is bad! Surely owners can't put up with that. Wonder how many engines have been lost to irregular oil checks?

wouldn't it be easier to note how much you actually put in?

Rich, you've missed my point. I'm not asking the question to ascertain how much to put in, I'm asking so that I can calculate how much is being used having driven 350 miles.

I don't want to top up just yet, as i want it to get to at least the half way mark before topping up.

Maybe, but then maybe you missed mine. Fill it to full on the dipstick, drive 500 or whatever then refill it to full on the dipstick, make a note of how much oil you put in, assuming you use a measured jug to pour it into your engine which you fill from the gallon can, and then you will know what your oil consumptions is.
