Topgears Mclaren F1 v Bugatti Veyron
Discussion
Surprised no one has started a thread on this. What do you recon about it when shown last night? I thought the 16 year old Mclaren did very well against the monster Veyron. It certainly took a convincing lead of the line, but the Veyron was also convincing hauling it back. Fantastic video

I also liked the SLR race as well.

Thought it was pretty pointless really - in a straight line a heavy 1000bhp car can beat light 640bhp car. Fabulous. Tells us nothing else. The feature a few years ago of several supercars was much better - and not just saying this because my CGT was featured, but at least it actually involved driving not simply dragging the cars. This was a case of them wanting the headline of "F1 vs Veyron head to head", but without any depth

I thought it was a good race, but I'd like them to do the Veyron at 0 passed by the Mc at 100mph to see who gets to 200 first......I think that'd be more interesting!
Isn't the statistic something crazy like the Veyron gets to 100mph then brakes to a stop and will still reach 200mph first?traxx said:
I think Hammond is a sh*t driver
both the Veyron and LP670 launches were crap
There is no way the McF1 should have been able to get away from the Veyron
They said in the article on the race in the TG magazine that the Veyron didnt feel right off the line and kept bogging down. Probably due to the heat which Turbo cars arent that happy with.both the Veyron and LP670 launches were crap

Yeah, but come on - someone says they'll close the (pretty much perfect) main road for you to thrash an F1 and a Veyron down - you know who'll win beforehand - a better man than me says no to that
(agree it was pretty pointless though, like the Lambo vs. 722, just saying if the option arose to do it, and you couldn't race them on a track, you'd struggle to turn it down
)As an aside, the more I see of that SV, the more I like it - does anyone know if any been specced as a manual? (I think I'm right in it being a zero cost option?)
Or perhaps the Veyron absolutely slapping the F1 wouldnt have made such good TV?
Either way, it was good to see, if meaningless. I would like to see a more general head to head test, as mentioned above, but then...what F1 owner would lend them their car to put a few hundred or thousands of miles on?

Air,
Have just checked and my power to weight argument carries a little weight in the form of a reference:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McLaren_F1#Specificat...
Down the page a bit it reads;
"In contrast to raw engine power, a car's power-to-weight ratio is a better method of quantifying acceleration performance than the peak output of the vehicle's powerplant. The standard F1 achieves 550 hp/ton (403 kW/tonne), or just 3.6 lb/hp. Compare with the Enzo Ferrari at 434 hp/ton (314 kW/tonne) (4.6 lb/hp), the SSC Ultimate Aero TT with 1003 hp/ton (747.9 kW/tonne) (2 lb/hp), and the Bugatti Veyron at 530.2 hp/ton (395 kW/tonne) (4.1 lb/hp)".
Phil
