E38 740i MAF

Righto I changed the MAFs on my M5 a while back and found the difference in performance mind-blowing. Now I thought that my 740i is bound to be improved with a replacement, being an even older car, and having shown similar symptoms to the M5. And being only £50, why not. But having been down to VW again to buy a MAF (for those not in the know, you can buy a VW one for half the price, and just fit the sensor to your original BMW housing), I lifted the bonnet only to find a completly different MAF, or at least the electrical connection on top was. Got my money back but am a bit stuck now.

So does anyone know what kind of MAF I need for my 740i, and how can I get one, perferably without having to go to the stealers and paying excesively for a little tiny plastic sensor.

Try to find the manufacturer part number, you might find it was fitted to other cars, and available through different sources.

Bosch component part numbers will usually be 0260 or 0280 *** ***, and siemens manufacturer numbers usually start 5wk* ***
