Yep, £400 a ton for sand.

Tesco are selling 10kg bags of sand aimed at kids sand pits for £4, that equates to £400 a ton!

Its no wonder they consistently are so profitable, apparently its a special offer, no kidding, its special alright!

I dont know what I despise more, Tesco and its greedy marketing or the dimwits that are fooled.

Argghg, nashing of teeth.

true but some people dont need a tonne of sand, and it doesnt make sense to sell it at the going rate... Plus rmember when you buy a tonne, you aint getting pretty bags or anything, just a whole load of mess.

For anyone who wants to know the real cost, look here:

You have to wonder who dreams up these products. Whoever thought a supermarket would be selling bads of sand, now if they can sell that product in Dubai they would be true genius.

I would pay £400 for a ton if they delivered it by dumping it ontop of someone I dislike such as an MP or Jamie Oliver.

I thought they filtered all paedos out of sand anyway, not just Tesco.

I think it has a minimal clay content to stop it getting too "claggy" when it gets wet.

I beg to differ. When I order a tonne of sand it comes in a lovely big bright blue bag. Ready-made to chuck a toddler in the top smile

Wouldn't advise the use of building sand in a sandpit.

For the authentic beach feel - throw a few dog turds and a broken bottle or two in there. Then play the part of a bigger kid and smack your child with a jellyfish - will save on petrol traveling to the coast, thats for sure.

Recipe for homemade moon sand (1 batch)

6 cups of play sand (I got a 50lb bag from Lowes, it was $4.99 plus tax)

3 cups of cornstarch (most dollar stores carry it for $1 per box...you'll need around 24 boxes for the whole 50lbs!)

1 1/2 cups of cold water

Step one: Mix the water and cornstarch together thoroughly, this will take a few minutes to get it nice and smooth.

Step two: Gradually mix in the sand, one cup at a time. You'll need to really work it in with your fingers.

Step three: Play with it!

Step four: When you're all done, pop it in an airtight container.

Step five: When you next play with it, you'll need to revive it with 2-3 tablespoons of water. Just sprinkle it over and work it in.

That's all there is to it. Very cheap, very easy and the kids will get to play with heaps of the stuff. Play sand also comes in different colors, so buy different colored bags to mix things up a little. Have fun!

whats the same for coffee? or any other product you dont need a ton of! Tesco are providing a product in a form that people want and can get very easily. What would you do? drive to a builders yard and buy some from them (with the odd stone and cat st mixed in) oh, and dont forget the petrol you just wasted when you could have got it with the shopping!
