As mentioned by Kamal on another thread... and warranting one of its own:

Silver Porsches with black interiors.

Dull or merely a sensible choice?

DULL:
- 80% of 996s or Boxsters come in this colourway. What happened to a little Don-esque Guards Red individuality? The 993 didn't suffer from this... Iris Blue, Arena Red, all competed with silver. But come the new shape and unless it's a GT3, it's silver. Annoying.

SENSIBLE:
- Silver is great for hiding the dirt, and stonechips aren't so visible. Resale is good because lots of punters like them in silver Silver suits the sleek, curvy shape of the Boxster and 996 well. Plus the black interior is practical.

So is silver the new Guards Red? And are you slightly lacking in passion and individuality if you chose it? Or just being a very practical, sensible Porsche owner, with an eye on resale values (like the rest of the flock)?

And is anyone else sick of silver Porsches, apart from Kamal and me ?

Its the largest selling colour across all marques by some margin I believe...

Still its Arena Red for my money...

In the past I always disliked silver cars because I thought that they lacked imagination. When we had to choose the colour of our last family hack (BMW 5-series) guess what?...we chose silver with black leather! The one before that, well...it was silver with grey!

You may ask why, I think that its just the acceptable colour for everyone. If you don`t want to make any statement then it`s silver. The problem is that there is just too many of them now, and in about 5 years everyome will be looking for anything but silver!

I will admit that when I was looking for my 993, top of my list was Speed Yellow and I held out to get it, but I must have looked at about 20 cars about 70% were silver and the rest were blue!

Don't dislike that combination, which as already mentioned, is probably its strength. I think it was in last Saturdays Telegraph; 40% of all UK-registered cars are now silver.

Red doesn't show the dirt that badly either!

Living in a cave down a dirt track, silver's ability to hide the dirt was an important factor in picking the colour on my car. The fact it is also the best looking colour on the 996tt is a bonus, the colour gives a good contrast to the grills at the front and the air intakes etc. Black also looks good, but I don't employ a full time car cleaner.

I think the Cayenne looks better in darker colours, if I were to buy a GT3 it would have to be yellow, a GT2 on the other hand would have to be black.

Depends on the car - Rather partial to the 'silberpfeil' SL500 Merc myself, but prefer dark Porsches. Was dribbling all over a dark metallic blue 996TT with light grey leather interior the other day - superb

My midnight blue 993 is nice - even nicer after a drop of the old Zymol HD cleanse to fetch the colour out a little.

I have to admit that silver flatters the shape of Porsches and is very easy to maintain. The biggest issue for me with Ocean is that when its clean and polished (read Zymol'd) it looks absolutely gorgeous-even better than a silver car (IMHO)...but as soon as its the tinniest bit dirty then it looks a bit like doom blue...

As for savannah interior..you either love it or hate it...I have found the love hate to be at a ratio of 30(love) 70 hate...I am happy to be in the 30!

Its a warm luxurious interior which goes with the expensive rich dark blue exterior. Saying that I once saw a 993 with a similar coloured interior and it was awful. The real kiss of death for any modern Porsche is red, white, dark green met, meridian (pinkish) and gold (yes I have seen one (mirage I think its called)..and yellow (though I think they look stunning)

I agree with the point regarding the 996TT`s and it is also relevant to most of the Porsche product range at the moment (except the KN).

Because of the multiple gaping holes lined with black plastic, the best colours are the ones that emphisise these features - because these are the agressive statements in today`s automotive styling trends, they give balls to the otherwise slim, curvy bodywork.

I say except the KN because, they have applied the same details to an already lardy shape which just makes it (especially the Turbo) look like kid with its mouth open on a 3G rolla-coaster!

So, in silver the KN looks too chubby. Black is best because it hides the bulges, just like a fat bird in tight pants - black is best for hiding the unsightly bits!

Silver - practical but boring and theres no denying it. Having said that I'd drive of in a puce 996TT quite happily, after all you can't see what colour it is when you're inside!

Went through the same colour crisis when finding the Mazzer, a good 60% of those are silver too. Luckily I managed to find a nice subtle shade of eyewatering red.

Drive a Passat if you don't want to be noticed.

That said, in-yer face coulours like Speed Yellow, Rubystone Red and Mint Green suit more lairy porsche machinery better, such as GT3s, GT2s and Turbos. You certainly can't ignore the car, whatever the colour.

PS I have owned a silver Porsche, just for impartiality's sake. (It was actually classed Glacier Blue, but was silver with a blue tinge in certain lights - very nice). Wasn't a Boxster or 996 though.

its ocean jade that really does it for me. Wow. Trouble is I was already at my max price and couldnt afford the special order colour so Silver it is. (my first silver car and it looks fab on the 996 Targa.)

I was going to go for black, as another car i had was black and it looked the danglies, but on the 996 it didnt do it for me.

I was also keen in the Zanzibar red (orangeeee) and for a GT3 yes or Jade but not on a Targa. (wife was not keen on the zanzibar and we drove around lots of OPC looking at all sorts of combination.

When/if I get a 996tt/997 tt it will be in black thats for sure. ...or maybee zanzibar...... or maybee even ocean Jade........

Not keen on silver but silvery grey/blue type colours are nice. Nice looking GT3 in classifides

But I want Orange
ON The Porsche web site there is a special 996 carrera 2 called "pure orange" mmmm thats the one for me.

Many people doubtless choose silver and black leather with an eye on residual values, or because they don't have much imagination and everyone else is doing it. However, there's no getting away from the fact that it looks good on many cars, including Porsches. One key driving force for this is that a large percentage of new car launches have featured silver, so a lot of people go on to order the same colour. At some point I expect fashions will change, and probably quite quickly when they do. Silver and black won't go out of favour overnight though.

Mines silver with green leather trim, i think silver hides motorway grim better.
