Why did I want to go up to the Highlands? Well, Because it's there. And the roads are supposed to be good. And while you're there, you might as well go the whole hog and visit the Isle of Lewis...

Why did I want to do it in the MX-5? Well... because, er... why not?

If you're wondering whether you can do a road trip in your car - just pack up and go. You'll find the best roads, the best views and the best days' driving - but only if you go and look.

And the winner is... oh, too many. But the road from Kyle of Lochalsh to Invergarry is special, as is the A85 from Tyndrum to Oban. And the A835 from Strathpeffer to Ullapool is pretty damn good. Oh, and the A859 from Leurbost to Tarbert...

Spent 4 days on tour up there in April with the MR2OC. Did Invergarry to Kyle. Followed by a circuit of Skye. Kyle across to Garve and up to Ullapool. Ullapool to Durness, Tongue and back to Ullapool via Lairg. Then Applecross and Bealach na Ba. Ending with a blat back from Kyle to Invergarry.
Fantastic roads, superb scenery and hardly any other cars. Apart from the Lambo, 2 BMWs, and an S2000 going the other way who saw us while we were having a photostop at the bridge at Kylesku and stopped for a chat.

Fantastic roads up there! I went in my Lotus Elise in October once-it was amazing. But not much room in a Lotus for luggage!! I love Ullapool and Pitlochory on the east coast.

Gizmo, you are one of life's positive persons, you have proved that you don't need a porsche or Aston Matin to go on a road trip, if I had a hat i'd take it off to you, well done !!!!!!

What's the drive up like?

I did Wales a while ago and it was a cracking weekend driving. Maybe the Highlands next?

Yes, it is. I drove to Edinburgh, which took a day, then to Oban (by a circuitous route!) which took another day. Then up to the isles was another fullish day - and back - and then the longest day of all was Oban back to London. 498 miles in sweltering heat rofl All worthwhile though!

More of a week long trip rather than just a weekend then.

Plenty of people do a roadtrip in a '5 - I was on this one.
One of the best holidays I've had.

Looks awesome to me. When I was a wee lad we used to go on holiday to a family friend's farm next to the A82 near Tyndrum. Stunning road heading north from there and I'd love to drive up there in the current car. A Highland roadtrip is certainly on the menu for the latter part of the year smile
