What has to be known !!!

While I am doing my built I came across some nasty things that I think should be known by other builders and that are not mentioned in the manual and that actually should be known when ordering. I would have loved to know these infos and I hope STIG can make this sticky so others can contribute and share their problems with the built. Once adressed the admin can remove entries so it would only contain information that recently came up.

Here my recent nasty drawbacks :

LED REAR LIGHTS:

I have ordered removal and flash lines from the factory which is a valuable option but not for the rear LED lights. The holesaw the factory has used on my
rear bonnet is too small for the lights I got delivered. This resulted in using a DREMEL and removing about 2-3 mm around of GRP in all of the 6 holes. It is a messy and painful job and I have also damaged the GRP at some places, which is almost unavoidable. So pls tell the factory when you order your kit not to open these so you can buy a holesaw that is matching the size of the lights or let them buy a matching holesaw ??.
I mailed the factory about this problem and they did not comment ?

HEAT SHIELD GLUE:

The glue that is shipped with the heat shield SHOULD NOT BE USED ! It is not suitable for attaching the heat shield to the bonnet as the adhesion is minimal and the amount supplied in no way enough for the task.
I had to remove the never hardened glue with ACETON detergent from the inside of the bonnet (....%$&§%$&?!!!). The heat shield itself is now ruined as well and I hope the factory will send me a replacement.
I made now tests and it looks that the polyurethane black stuff you use for the alloy panelling is working fantastic for the job. As it can withstand the direct heat for fastening the anodized grills above the manifolds it should be as well suited for attaching the heat mat.

Glue shipped with the heat shield? You modern day builders are having it much too easy! You'll be telling me next that the matting was cut to shape. I used Evo-Stick contact adhesive for my heat shield and that remained in place for 9 years (it was replaced by the factory after my "incident" last year). Evo-Stick is a lot cheaper than the "black stuff".

you see no problem with the glue but if the company supplies glue I assume that they supply what is necessary to make this stick and of a quality that works.
Now I painfully had to remove the "FACTORY" glue and it also looks like that I will not get a replacement heat mat - ONLY BECAUSE MY BUILDER LIFE IS SO EASY !
I am buying the black polyurethane here in Germany for 3 EUROs one piece and 1 will be enough for the heat shield - not too expensive ?

exactly like a contact glue should be applied, put on both surfaces let dry out and then attach.
Only that is is not glueing, it could be easily removed. In my opinion the amount they supply is way not enough for the
heat mat. No need to worry any longer the black stuff test worked out very well this is what I recommend to use for others.

Which of the three contact surfaces came unstuck?

1) Glue to shield - doubt it.
2) Glue to glue - left it too long before contact?
3) Glue to clip - preparation of the clip not sufficient? Didn't paint it first did you?

believe me I did that before, I know exactly how to work with these glues, if you want to save yourself trouble use the black polyurethane it can travel much easier in the surface of the heat mat.

Eh? Factory supplied evo stick for both the GTR and Can-Am?

Re. the light apetures - mine also needed 'easing' a bit, which I also did with a dremel. Better to have holes too small than too large!
