Bodywork due on 22nd

Hi there again,

Thought I would let you all know that my bodywork is due to be delivered before Christmas!
Looking forward to it as I have been twiddling my thumbs for a couple of weeks now.
I shall be able to get quite a bit done before the new year.

I'm gone for yellow (yesterdays colour apparantly, but I like it)

Also ordered a load of other bits, which although are listed under accessories, I have found are essential, lights for instance. Adds up to more than the cost of the bodywork.

Can anyone think of any bits I may need but are not listed?

Incidently, has anybody noticed the cost of the Getrag 6 speed box on the companys web site?

I'm not sure really, Steve.

I did think about a radio, but I can't see the point of having one with a V8 12inches from your ear.

I have fitted a radio but also included an intercom so the radio and mobile phone etc go to headsets for driver and passenger.
There are a number of things that will be easier to install before or at the same time as the body goes on.
Immobiliser, alarm, central locking, central fire extinguisher system, master kill switch, stack dash and all it’s wiring, access hatches to the front bottom section of the side pods, removable steering wheel.

If you want comfort and don’t mind the weight then sound and heat insulation around the body panels.

Got the heat and sound insulation in.

Going with standard instruments to keep things as simple as poss.

Immobiliser I thought would get done after car is finished.

Central locking, I was'nt going to bother with.

Access panels to side pods,though, that sounds like a good idea. I'll look into that. Thanks.

I'd suggest you get this done during the build - you'll want/need to run wires for canopy pin switches etc. All much easier before fitment of cockpit.

My alarm installer left the wires for these in the sidepods so I cn have a go at fitting the solenoids in the doors later.

You will probably need a profesionally installed Thatcham Cat 1 to satisfy your insurance company.

I entered into a workshare agreement with a local installer. He sells it to me cheap, I install it, he does a quick test and writes the certificate.

He also sold me the central locks for £10 each.
It now locks when you set the alarm remote and visversa.

Just fit an FIA kill switch. It's just as effective and a lot cheaper.

How have you mounted the solenoids in the doors? I did make a start on this and gave up as getting the car completed for SVA was more of a priority. I was having difficulty figuring out a way of mounting them so they could actuate the locking mechanism.

Incidentally 2 wire solenoids are about £7 in Maplins.

The lock motors I have are 5 wires I think but in my application will only be using 2.
It took me an age with cardboard templates but the end result was fairly simple. It is an angle bracket at something like 110 degrees. One face is trapped between the door skin and the factory lock with the other face mounting the motor. You can assemble the whole thing on the bench and test it then put it all into the door.
Will get some pictures up on my site later today if I can galvanise my teenage son into action.

There are some elements of how it works that I will not publish here in the open but anyone considering going the same route should mail me for the details.

I spoke to the factory re: Getrag cost. Apparently this is what it would cost to purchase from a Porsche dealer. It is worth ringing them to find out the current position.

How far into your build are you?

Whilst it doesn’t matter to me you had better own up to what colour it is as there appears to be a 'colour prejudice' undercurrent to this forum.

Hardly started - just about to flip the chassis to panel the floor. Haven't finally decided on colour yet, but would prefer a paint finish in either dark metallic blue or something like Jag quartz. Why be the butt of jokes from either red yellow or blue camps when I can invite them from all 3!

Hi Clive,

I checked with the factory regarding getrag.
I've asked for a G50 box, comes in at £1,650.

BTW I lagged the water pipes where they will pass through the side pods. I used a dense foam unsplit lagging 9mm wall thickness (Armstrong Armaflex or equivalent, not the stuff you can get from a diy store). This comes in 2m lengths and just slides over the pipe with a little help from some silicon spray. Then I cut out the small sections necessary for the brackets.

I read on CJ's site that this was a contributing factor to some overheating problems he had. Of course, he's running some ungodly horsepower. I assume you have read thru his site. (Who hasn't?) Interested to know how you come out on this though!

Yep, I read his site, many times.

I don't think he has removed the lagging on his though. And like you say his engine is somewhat big on horses.
