I have a problem with the speedo on my little girl violet. It appears to be running around 7 mph too slow, so when I think I'm doing thirty, I'm actually doing closer to 37/38, it seems to stay a constant 7 mph out even when I increase the speed (I have tested this many times, all on quiet roads and not going too over the top!) How can I change the speedo? And how easy is this to do?

2 ways send your speedo of for re calibration or swap the nylon drive over in the box for the speedo

Not true on both counts IMHO.

It's illegal to break the speed limit, but it's not part of the MoT test to have a working speedo, afterall how would the tester check it ?? It is a requirement of Construction and Use regulation to have speed and distance measurement in the vehicle............ but its not part of the MoT test!!

My mini speedo was out for years diffrent gearbox, wheels etc. Always passed the MOT. I just worked out the diffrence from what it read to what speed I was doing. Could be a speedo fault as gearing gives a % change 5=6 10=12 20=24 etc.

Thanks for that guys! Very helpful as always. Will check out "speedy cables" in a mo for a possible re-calibration. By the way, the difference between speedo reading and speed doesn't change with acceleration it's alway a constant 7 mph, so hopefully we can rule out a speedo fault. Also I'm glad that it's nothing to do with the MOT as the garage who was working on her and getting her ready would be in some serious trouble!!!

I recommend Speedycables. The turn-round time is quite long (mine took a month) but they did an excellent job. They even replaced the somewhat rusty rear case of my speedo with a new shiny one with the new Turns Per Mile printed on it! Visit the web site, take the measurements they ask for, as accurately as you can then send the speedo plus info. They contacted me when it was done and I paid by card over the phone.

Done some reading:

1. MOT point, yes I was wrong.

2. Technically the speedo can underead, however if the odometer is calculated from this value this cannot underead as it is considered clocking and is illegal.

this has been discussed on here before - for the mot you dont need a speedo, you just need a means to determine your speed (a rev counter)

vosa do require a mileometer though from memory.


my racer passes with nothing but a rev counter fine

the milometer for the mot is a joke- my sprint has had three speedos fitted in the last five weeks!!!

Sorry to be a pedant...... but again this is a myth. Clocking i.e. deliberately altering the recorded mileage of a vehicle for the express purpose of misleading a potential purchaser into agreeing to an unfair price is fraud, which is illegal, but again nothing to do with MoT or Construction and Use regulartions. It's the act of committing fraud which is illegal, not the act of changing the recorded mileage.

Taking Guru's point what is to stop you putting a new/different odometer into the car, so long as you tell any prospective purchaser that the recorded mileage isn't representative of the mileage of the vehicle you are fine. This is why most car dealers put a disclaimer on the odometer that the displayed mileage cannot be verified as geniune and correct.

I have fully rebuilt my project mini from the shell up, all new or reconditioned parts including engine, gearbox, suspension etc and a new speedo/odometer. As such the odo reads 600 odd miles now, which is representative of the vehicles current mileage, but not the 43K it had previously travelled before the rebuild. Which mileage more accurately reflects the current condition of the vehicle ??
