Have set the timing to 4 degrees as per the bible and the engine ticks over good and sounds great however when I drive it no pick up, could this be a the advance mechanism not working ?

4 deg BTDC sounds very conservative. I'm running 8-9 BTDC at idle and around 29-30 all in.

Oh and make sure you disconect your vac advance when setting the timing.

Get a glamourous assistant to increase the revs whilst you check the timing with you strobe, as revs increase you'll see the timing change if your mech advance is working.

... and then get glamorous to suck on the pipe while you watch it advance even further...

I think it should be 8 BTDC as a starting point, and wind it back a couple if she pinks in hot weather. smile
