Morning all,

New business venture means I'm going to be on the road a lot soon and I'm going to need a sat nav system. I'm looking for the best one available which offers UK and ideally Euro mapping, as I'm expecting to have to make a good few trips across the channel.

Budget not really important (within reason!), as long as it's likely to be kept up to date and is reliable I'm happy.

I'd prefer one which warned of speed cameras and stuff, any other features a bonus but I can't think of anything else that's a 'must have'.

Always been a big fan of Garmin units, but I'm open to suggestions smile

One question, I know some countries (France springs to mind) don't permit speed camera devices, what's the score with Sat Nav units that have a scamera database? Permissible or liable to get smashed up by plod at the roadside?

Cheers smile

You are allowed Sat Nav with Camera databases - just not radar/laser detectors AFAIK.

I'd say go to Halfords, play with the ones they have, see which interface you like the most - then buy it online.

Cheers Matt, I plan on going to press some buttons on the display stands at some point over the weekend, but it's nice to go armed with a list of potentials rather than spend ages weeding through stuff that's not upto scratch smile

I've used TomTom, Garmin and Copilot before - and find TomTom the easiest to use.

What do you need it to do? MP3 player? Bluetooth phone handsfree?

Do you want things like the weather updates?

For the Speed Cameras, I think TomTom has the best 'warn when near POI' type features - they seemed to be fixed on Garmin and Copilot but TomTom was customisable for distance.

I'm not fussed about any other features really, I've yet to buy the vehicle it's going to be used in (shopping for that at the weekend too) but I'd expect whatever vehicle I get to have some kind of hands free solution inbuilt. Probably Sat Nav too but I prefer standalone units should we need something bigger etc. Things like the weather etc I know well in advance anyway as its pertinent to my job.

Really I'm most interested in the actual navigation side of things, speed camera DB would be ace too. I've not had cause to use them much in the last couple of years, bought the ex a garmin something or other which seemed great and very intuitive. I use a Garmin 60CSx for other stuff and love it, but it's not really good as a navigator in the conventional sense.

I haven't used the Garmin much, but my Dad had one and found the actual routing not very good - it took strange directions. Never had any real issues with TomTom in that respect.

PocketGPSWorld forums are a good bet if you want to do research.

had a play with some of the higher end garmin units today, quite impressed I must admit, don't seem to have been any huge developments short of adding the aforementioned gadgets like games and bluetooth but they're fairly user friendly and intuitive.

Checking out a few alternatives tomorrow so I'll probably be buying before the week is out. I'll post my thoughts and ramblings here smile Haven't had a chance to check out tom-tom's latest offerings yet, but I'm not as initially impressed with them from a first glance. More than willing to give them a fair test though smile
