Yet another hair-brained scheme to waste taxpayers money, paying people not to kill themselves!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/taysid...

On this basis I must be due a few grand of my tax back, seeing as I haven't smoked for a good few years?

Incredible, isn't it?

Why on earth anyone should be rewarded in this way is beyond me.

"There are 36,000 smokers in Dundee, about half of whom live in poverty." Simple solution: stop buying cigarettes; live in luxury.

So they are onto a double loss.

If they stop smoking they lose their funding and then they are paying them as well.

Where does this stop?

Are we going to pay people not to get fat?
Pay them not to drink?
Pay people not to drive?

I think I may well wait for this to come in before I lose any more weight.

See if they will pay for my membership to the squash club and the gym.

Or do I have to be on the dole for this as well?

It'll help if you're Scottish as well.

I suppose it's all a cost benefit analysis, it's a pretty established principle that you can train people to do what you wish by establishing a reward system.

Yes, but I don't want to be 'trained' by these people.

Perhaps we can train MP's to bugger off and let us got on with our lives without them meddling...then again maybe not. No point rewarding a toddler with a biscuit if he knows he can just help himself to the cookie jar anytime he likes...

This scheme will be over-run with non-smokers pretending to quit.

Either that, or enterprising non-smokers will tout their smoke-free breath for hire to those who ca't give up but want to scam the system.

Oh, and aside from those "victories" it'll make damn all difference and cost loads.

You'd think we'd seen it all before or something.

What by the NHS trying to cut down their revenue?

Smoking related illnesses cost about £5 billion.

Smoking income is over £10 billion, and those people will be living longer so costing more through pensions and general healthcare.
