UK Owners Speed Trap Detection?
Discussion
Hi All UK Owners;
I am thinking of getting "Road Angel" fitted to my 98 V8 Esprit.
Here is the link to the Road Angle web site;

I hear that you need a GPS and Laser based device now days, I live in London, and as far as I know all speed cameras are the Gatso type still down here, however it is only a matter of time before we get the new SPECS (Time of Distance (Average Speed)) type cameras like up north around Manchester. Has anyone fitted a Road Angel, give any advice?
I am also interested in the Jammers, I know the are ileagal, but when you are doing 100mph+ around England you are already breaking the law, so why not use the jammer. I understand in the US they are quite widely used, but require expert fitting, and a test gun to ensure they are fitted correctly?
Really, all I am after is know if the M25 camera's are turned on, or if a un-marked fuzz car is in front or behind me. I only break the speed limits in a straight line on the motorways, around town is not a problem, as I agree with cameras in town hot spots.
Cheers

Have an old BEL system in mine, I too want to go GPS,as the newer time-trap cameras have no 'radar' to detect,making motorways a licence breaker.
As my PC is v/old,was looking at G odessy mopheus,as it plugs direct into phone line (not PC) to down load new info. I could also get a second cradle for it so i could use it in my work wheels too,i like the way it just slides out,and its compact 'pocket' size,as if using for work,i'd always have to remove it when parked.
However,the road angel has the GPS speedo and i'm getting a new PC soon.
Have seen these on UK Esprits,this year,at shows,with the radar add on attatched too. I like. This means i could just fit the old BEL in my work wheels (as is 100% better than nothing).
I too would like to hear of owners opinions of the road angel,and how easy it is to use on PC.

I have a Road Angel, and like it so much I have just bought the Mrs one for her birthday. They now come with a Radar Detector module as standard. I have had mine for over a year now and swear by it. Makes you aware of the camera's position more than anything and you immediatly slow down to the limit. Also they have a GPS Speedo. You will be surprised how far out your speedo is
I have an iPAQ, Pretec GPS CF card and TomTom Navigator software. You can download a free speed camera POI (point of information) database from www.pocketgps.co.uk. Works brilliantly and you get sat nav too!
I have a road angel and it is very good but I think the lazer is a waste of time cos when it goes off your nicked anyway unless you hit the brakes so hard they do you for dangerous driving. The good thing about RA is no false alerts as it knows which side of the road you are on. Some other devices are pathetic as they alert you to the camera below the bridge you are currently passing over. If you have a heated front screen or UV protection screen BMW 7 series new model I suggest you leave it for a few weeks as it doesn't work without seperate aeriel which is approx another £180 fitted. Enjoy

Oh,and is the module for radar or laser or both?,
I agree with the comment on laser detection. Police in UK need 3 SECS to get speed by laser,so my current laser detector serves as a 'you're nicked' indicator only.
I would want radar though,as i do like to know the 'live' one's,and warn non-equipped mates.

I have a Beltronics 550, it detects the radar cameras on the M25. Some camaras have laser, which are only detected once you have passed the camera itself (laser points in direction you are travelling - not many on the M25). Bel 550 is 360 deg detection. See link below if you are intrested.

Back again. The Road Angel shows your actual speed on a continuous basis. So my BMW was over reading by about 4 to 7% depending upon speed whereas my old technology E Type was exact. The technology does not detect speed cameras it simply knows where they are and warns you as you approach. If a new camera is installed say Monday it will only know it is there when it is told hence each week or so you need to download the new info. I bought the Road Angel because it is easy to move from car to car there are other which are less portable. Comparisons can be found on the internet to help you choose.
