Basically, I want to plug one of these:

into something that will then switch on a series of outside lights (12v, so I want to switch on the transformer, probably just switch a 6-way power strip. Any suggestions?

(yes, the wiring will be done by a spark)

Not automation as such.

They're just switches, fed by a 3 core & earth I think so you have a permanent live and a switched live.

You'd use that to switch a lighting circuit in the normal way.

So would wiring it into a normal mains extension lead be "shonky"?

Just get the electrician to wire it properly? From the breaker to a switch (optional) to the sensor to the lights. Easy

You need to find out the max switching Current (Amps)of the photocell. depending on the sise of the transformer it probably wouldn't be a good idea to wire it directly to the photocell, also I wouldn't connect it to a trailing 13Amp lead.
