I see there are quite a few modifications available for the TDi 300 engine.

My vehicle is one of the last Discovery One's (1999) and seems to be standard. It is running very well.

Should I consider removing the EGR - what does this do and what are the effects?

Should I consider a Cat removal exhaust down pipe? Again what is this designed to do or help with?

Are there any other modifications I should consider or is it best to leave well alone if it’s all working OK?

Cheers.

Hello & welcome to the world of wonderful 300Tdi ownership thumbup

I've only had my 300 Tdi Defender for a wee while but looked into the same things as you. In the end I decided to leave well alone as I want my motor to last the distance and feel any additional strain will only go against this. There are a few things you can do to ensure you're getting the maximum from the 300 tdi engine in the first place -

Full service
Good quality air filter
Replace the cam belt to ensure your pump timing is spot-on the mark (mine had been done prior but I had it replaced anyway - the difference was HUGE as the pump timing was rather out)

If you want to mod the usual route is increase the fuel pressure and delivery, change the intercooler to a large capacity type and do the 'zorst'. Could take you from 122bhp to 150bhp (ish - iirc).

Still, these beasties were not built for speed and I rather enjoy pootling about - it's kind of relaxing tbh!

All ther best,

Jason.

PS - if you are near AJS 4X$ I would give them a big thumbup

Thanks for the reply - I think I will leave it alone

Done most of the sevice items now, and again thanks for the good advice there

I really want it to keep going and not to put any strain on the engine

It starts well and runs well and seems to be doing about 35 to a gallon of oilly stuff, so I guess thats not too bad

Cheers

I've removed the EGR, replaced the 'cat' pipe (although it's more of a particulate filter) and fitted a 'sports' exhaust (which essentially removes the centre silencer) on my '95 300 TDi Disco, and it has made a big difference.

Engine breathes much better, the turbo spins up easier and there is much more grunt when pulling away from the lights. It's no longer embarassing planting your right foot and being left behind by the 1.0 Micra in front of you! Now I can overtake stuff!!!

Plus the parts are all so cheap to buy and easy to fit. Well worth the effort in my opinion.

EGR makes bugger all difference on emmissions in the UK so get rid of it. When you do give the intercooler and inlet a good clean. It will be full of tar like gunk. It does help.

Next steps are to get a bigger intercooler and up the fuelling. Upping the boost wont make a huge difference on performance but it will effect engine life. it was more effective on the 200TDI but the 300TDI runs slightly higher boost any ways.

A "sports" exhaust will help with the breathing of the engine.

Overall effect will be to make it less sluggish.
