What has happened to the oldies of today? I can’t remember the last time I got a thank-you for holding a door open for someone, especially the older generation.
I would hold a lift door for anyone and all ‘anyone’ does is shuffle in, avoid eye contact and jab the button for the floor they want.
I let people out of side streets when I can and the most likely to acknowledge you at all are lorry drivers or other professional drivers, everyone else seems to take it as their God-given right to be let out by me.
It is by no means just old people who lack manners: the youth of today are as bad as ever in their selfish self important ways. But what has happened to the older generation? Is it simply that they are now just the first generation to grow up without manners and they are carrying the trait into old age or has there been a change in the whole lack of manners at any age that I seem to have missed the memo on?

Those who expect a reward do not deserve a reward.

The reward for such good behaviour should be self-fulfilling IMO.

They're probably terrified of being mugged and find it easier to avoid any contact as a result.

Or maybe they're just rude old tossers.

They think being old gives them certain 'rights'. Bad manners being one of them.

If all old people are being rude to you, and you accept the premise that not all old people are exactly the same, then you must accept the inevitable conclusion that the common factor in old people being rude to you is, in fact, you.

Never trust the elderly anymore than you might anyone else. Witnessed an old woman shoplifting recently, was told to watch my manners when she realised I'd noticed.

Hats off to this guy though...

Or maybe they have adapted to what they consider is todays norm.
Probably the latter though.

I've always found that older people have worse manners, at least when addressing anyone younger.

As a student I worked in a local supermarket - not a prestigious job, but one that got me through uni with a first and straight into a good job. Yet the contempt with which older people would treat a 'shelf stacker' was palpable. Young people meanwhile were much more likely to say please and thank you, rather than just barking out demands.

Spooky - was talking about this with the wife and in-laws last night, prompted by SWMBO saying exactly what you write there.
We all agreed though, it's a sad fact.
Was queueing for tickets in osbourne house 2 weeks ago (full of the ignorant old farts), Mrs in front, me behind with pram when 2 old dragons tried to push in between us. Tried squeezing between the pram and wife. I wasn't having that and blocked them and then one stuck her stick in front of the pram wheels. She was nicely shocked when I shoved her stick out of the way.
The whole experience was marred by these miserable, old, shuffling bags of bones clogging up the entire house.

Manners cost nothing and should be used. Besides a thank you for holding a door open etc is not a reward, its an acknowledgment.

You don't hold a door for someone to get the elusive prize of a 'Thank You' you do it because it's the right thing to do.

Just as its the right thing to say 'Thank You' should someone hold a door for you.

The sad reality is this nation is largely populated by thick and ignorant, unmannered commoners.
