help please

help needed.... i've bought a diagnostic lead and downloaded the software but when i connect to ecu i keep getting an error message telling me that it cannot connect to serial port!! any ideas what could be causing this thanks

you need to make sure that the pc is set to use COM1 in system manager.

how do i do that? i'm a pc novice!!! my laptop has windows vista if thats any help thanks
