HI all,

just imported a nice TVR Tasmin 280i convertible from UK to Belgium, but I'm looking for some more info : the car was built in 1984 (there's a metal tag on the door side saying 'manufactured January 1984) and has been imported to UK in 1989 : on the V5 it says : "1st registration 07/07/1989, but on the back of V5 it says : remark : vehicle imported. registered/used overseas - declared manufactured 1984"

I was told that it was imported from Hong Kong ; where can I ask for more info on that ? DVLA ? Would anybody know what the real first registration was, and in what country ?

Thanx in advance ; greetings form Belgium

If it was first registered in the UK then you should be able to get info from the DVLA.
I thought that someone had the TVR records of all the cars that left the factory but I dont know who.
Maybe TVR Power ? Give them a call.

Good luck.

Thanx, I'll give them a call on Monday

I've found an old copy of a V5 docuent : the car was subject to a plate transfer : now it is SBZ9992, and it used to be A886DUY

Don't know why, I don't find any trace of A886DUY via CarwatchUK ; could this be an oversees registration plate ?

Hi bzguy,
That looks like a UK plate (old style). The A in A886DUY relates to the registration year. Which I think A was 1984.
I dont know if Hong Kong used to use the UK plate system but I think I did. Maybe someone can correct me.

Maybe thats another DVLA question.

HI so called :

I checked online, indeed, the prefix A was used from Prefix Letters
A 01 August 1983 31 July 1984

smile

Now I'll try to get confirmation from DVLA, preferably w statement saying the car was subject to a plate change
Thanx, I'll keep this up to date ...

No thats a UK plate not a Hong Kong plate, the SBZ plate is a Northern Irish plate but doesn't not necessary mean it came from NI as NI plates are sold in the UK for personal plates.there was a member on PH from Hong Kong, Winstan Lau ? who you could contact for help in Hong Kong.failing that get in contact with the TVRCC in Hong Kong

I sent a mail to Hong Kong DVLA, but the Hong Kong story might be wrong then ...

Where do you get the info that SB... is a Northern Ireland registration plate ? What do you think about the import ? It's imported in 1989, it still had the 'A' plate ; it's changed somewhere to SB ... Does the date make sense about SB ... & A ... ?

Thnkl you, you're a great help so far smile

Uk plates starting with the prefix A were from the early 1980's which would be correct for the age of car.whilst i am taking an educated quess here,if a car is imported into the uk it will get an age related plate ie year of manufacture 1984 then it will get an A plate or whatever was correct for that year.
The SBZ plate is a Northern Irish Plate which many people buy in England as personal plates which is perfectly legal with Northern Ireland being part of the UK.they are a good way of hiding the age of the vehicle to the casual observer as they are not age related.
Hong Kong plates if memory serves me correct are two letters and then up to four numbers.
i tried to search for winstan lau in the directory on PH but could not find him,i may have the spelling wrong. but get in touch with the TVRCC UK who will no doubt have a contact number for TVRCC Hong Kong.talking to Winstan some time back i seem to remember that they all use the one garage there so if the guy was not a club member, get a contact number for the garage they all use who will probably knpw the car.

I've imported three cars from HK to UK and in all instamnces, I had to provide the DVLA with the cars HK registration documents (essentially the same as a V5, but used to pay the annual road tax). AS such the UK DVLA should be able to confirm the HK document details.

There was a story in a Sprint Magazine about someone who recently imported a Tuscan into HK, so he may have the servicing contact you are looking for.

FYI, HK registrations come with two letters, then 2 or 3 or 4 (max) numbers.

so the HK story is probably wrong ... the story about the A plate being changed to SBZ makes sense, what's left is to track down where the car was imported from

talke to my UK colleague, he confirms that the current plate (SBZ9992) is a personalized plate, and it's mine so I could sell it if I want to.

Probably the car has been bought initially by a British military (ie servicing in Germany), and imported the car in 1989 into UK, then he got the A plate.
That's the story (or at least a probable story) behind it ...

Tomorrow I'll call DVLA, can't wait to have more news smile

if it was a British military personnel import into Germany,it would have had military plates issued for it but i don't remember the process.i think it was issued with UK registration and plates first because you could swap from one to the other.these were later got rid of as it identified private military vehicles to terrorists. black plates and white letters/numbers were the colour of the military plates, can't remember the letter/number sequence though.
DVlA will no doubt unravel the history for you, keep us informed with what you find out

hi dhf : as my British colleague told me : probably the guy serving the military overseas (ie Germany) imported his car, and since the car was firstly registered in 1984, they gave him an A plate, to nmatch the dates. (otherwise you could have an old car 'look' like a newer one by having newer plates)

The SBZ plates are for sure personal plates, they're officially mine now, I can even pass MOT with it in Belgium (for immatriculation matters, so I don't need to ask an expensive garage to do it for me with special plates)

Belgian authorities officially cannot make a fuzz on the dates, since I do have proof of car being registered in 1984 (the photocopy of the V5 stating A plate) AND the VIN plate, which clearly states car mmanufactured in 1984.

On top of that, this kind of car was only manufactures between 1984 & 1984

No news since ...

Still awaiting an answer from DVLA to my V888 request form.

If anyone around here might have some info (car might be known within the TVR-world ?), all info is more than welcome smile
