Disco TD5 XS v. P38 DHSE
Discussion
I'm pondering getting back into a LR again. I had a RangeRover 4.6 HSE for 14 months until everything broke all at the same time, so another 4.6 is out of the question sadly.
I'm tempted by a RR 2.5 DHSE as it's a known quantity. I know i like the car itself, how it drives and i know it suits my lifestyle. I also know it doesn't have a grenade under the bonnet, but am also aware i can't get one in a manual which makes my wallet twitch based on my 4.6 experience.
However i've been drawn to a TD5 discovery recently. They seem to be at an equivalent price to DHSEs at the moment, if not a little less. I've never driven one though. So i'm wondering what they're like in comparison to a P38, especially on-road manners and comfort.
I'll use it for basic offroad but i'll never trouble the outer reaches of either of their ability so that's largely irrelevant. Towing, likewise, is much of a muchness between the two. Reliability is a paramount concern however.
SO, does anyone have experience of the two to offer?

Bump for weekday people.
Another bump as interested to read the outcome... I have a Tdi for you if you are interested, one of the 'last' 50th Anniversary editions, fully loaded and undoubtedly a collectors' piece (ignoring the fact that I reversed into a lamp post 6 years ago)Come on everyone, I need to change 'Dolly' and SWMBO is after a new RR and we dont have the budget!
Disco 3 may is in reach but I am not sure that the OP means this? (Doh! on my part)

When my P38 went into the indy specialist for a service in April, they had it for a couple of days (their workload, and convenience for me) and I had a TD5 Disco as a courtesy car
IMHO a P38 is head and shoulders above it in terms of comfort, and regarding road manners, I found the Disco a bit "wallow-ey"
Was glad to get back into my Vogue!

Not having driven the P38 I can only comment on ~TD5s.
I've had tow now. The first was an ES with ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement) fitted. The handling for a two and a quarter ton 4x4 was ace if you will pardon the pun. My current TD5 do not have ACE And is noticeable when pushing through bends. However one learns to adapt to it.
Even on road tyres moderate off roading is good as you might expect but I would guess the Rangie would be too.
In reality probably not much between the two. However for me Range Rovers should be about V8s. A diesel Rangie is just not right. The Disco on the other hand is well suited to the TD5.
A chipped and uprated TD5 is probally the best all round option.
It might be just personal preference but while both models are no longer current the Disco has a classical Land Rover/4x4 look about it while the P38 defiantly looks dated.

In terms of engine characteristics I'd rate the BMW engine above the TD5. I found the TD5 (lack of) torque characteristics very frustrating, with nothing happening below 1500 rpm.
In terms of driving the ARC suspension of the later Disco places it head and shoulders above the P38, although the height changing was very useful for loading.
In terms of interior space I found the P38 boot much more useful, the split folding tailgate sometimes less so (one of the dogs decided to get out by walking over the load cover).
