I would swerve it if i was you. I have lived in the Carib a lot of the last 10 years. There are better places to go like St.Lucia , Granada BVI etc
Trini is a harsh place Tobago better but is having a lot of problems right now.
The beaches in Trini are fairly naff.

Mrs. NCoT watched the Trevor programme but didn't think it was much cop.

Can't say too much about the job as it's not official but it does sound great. It's a new venture with a lot of money behind it, quite a few colleagues going out who I am good friends with and work well with. Also looks like there will be a job for Mrs.NCoT too, and money is apparently good too.

I worry that if I don't do it I will regret it for the rest of my life. However, it means putting our stuff in storage, selling 3 cars, renting out the house, we both have ill parents, and at the end of the 3 year contract it would mean coming back over here to no work as we are both self employed and we'd have to start at the bottom again.

It is very tempting as it's everything I thought I wanted. We're happy and comfortable at the moment though...

Trinidad & Tobago are very different islands. Tobago is a laid back beautiful island, but there isn't really that much to do. Trinidad is much larger with far more opportunities for work and play. However it has its problems, which seem to be on the increase according to someone we know who lives there (we were also considering a move out there). If that's where your job offer is, it may be possible to live on Tobago and commute to Trinidad, the flight takes approx 20 mins IIRC, but you'll have to have a well paid job to make this a viable option. There are nice areas of Trinidad, but like everywhere, you get what you pay for. Would it be possible for you to make a trip out there to check it out before you have to make the decision?

I believe they will fly us out there for a couple of weeks to get the lay of the land, but I'll have to be pretty damn sure I want it otherwise it will seem like I'm after a free holiday eek

Also, an important question is what do they drive over there? Is it older American stuff?

Actually it's mostly Jap stuff as they drive on the left. The Toyota Hilux seemed to be a favourite, although I saw a few Evos as well. Driving in Tobago is pretty easy, apart from the odd pothole and obstacle on a blind bend, but driving in Port of Spain is not for the faint hearted. The fuel is cheap though, but not always available at night. They have a fairly laissez faire attitude to many rules of the road - although remember to wear a t-shirt, otherwise you could be charged with 'driving bareback'.

One of my employees used to live in Trinidad and he often visits family there - he loves it. He was telling me about his brother who lives there. In short:

He was nicked for speeding.
He was instructed to pay $20 to the local copshop by 6pm
At 5pm he goes to copshop
On reception is his next door neighbour who happens to be a copper:

Copper: "what you doin' 'ere mon?"
Criminal driver: "ave coom to pey me fine mon"
Copper: "aah don't ya bother mon, you is me neebur mon"
Criminal driver: "wot you ees lettin' me off mon?"
Copper: "course mon, you is cooool ok"
Criminal driver: "gimme five bro"
Copper" "hey mon come with me bro"

Then he took him into the police cellar where half a dozen coppers were having a party, all lubricated with confiscated booze and pot.

In other words, my understanding is that Trinidan & Tobago is pretty laid back if you can get on with the locals!

As said Tobago is nice but has been suffering problems recently.
I live in the caribbean off and on and used to run charter boats out there.
Have been there all winter so i tend to keep my ear to the ground.

Anything they can fit chrome wheels (with high profile tires) onto to smile was in Tobago over Christmas in 2006 and was really taken with the place; dad has worked in Trinidad and says it's not much cop. Tobago was beautiful though, don't what it'll be like to work there tho.

Carnival is the soul of Trinidad. Yet simply to say this reveals and conceals a great deal.

yes I loved it but it's surprising how many Trinidadians try to avoid it.

Good tip if you go to Carnival is to take only a few dollars and no wallet,I watched teams working the crowds pockets.
They never have a enough public loo's so the place turns into one .
