Inspiration & kick up the arse.
Discussion
Myself and the GF are currently busy getting ourselves a lot fitter than we have been for a good year or so, whilst it is easy enough to slog away in the gym etc we have decided we want to enter some sort of event next year to really aim for but we can't decide what would be appropriate.
Ideally it would something organised so we would have to sign up and have no chance of dropping out, it also has to be very challenging, I'm not about walk a mile for charity here!
Most ideas so far are cycle based as we both enjoy that more than running for example although the Great North run to me would be achievable for example.
All ideas most welcome!

Bear baiting...
Not really organised but kick one in the nuts and you will know what running is.
I went on an organised walk up Mt Ranier years ago.Not really organised but kick one in the nuts and you will know what running is.
Guide says 'Oh and if you see a bear, dont run, a grizzly can run 100 yards in 6 seconds'
Which was settling being from a nation where the most dangerous animal is a bloody Adder.

How about a trek to ABC on everest?
My girlfriend and I are aiming to go to Alp D'Huez later this year to try the road ascent in less than 1 hour on road bikes. Last time I did it a few years ago it took 1 hour 5 minutes.
Would love to do something similar to the Etape, although we need something 'official' rather than just turning up on the day and 'riding up a big hill'My girlfriend and I are aiming to go to Alp D'Huez later this year to try the road ascent in less than 1 hour on road bikes. Triathlons and Ironman do seem like the only possibilities, in fact it was her brother just completing an Ironman which has inspired us. (nutter, on his 1st attempt he completed it in just over 10hrs!)
There are local duathlon (run-bike-run) and triathlon (swim-bike-run) events all over the country. For local running-only events have a look at the event calendar on www.runnersworld.co.uk or google for the du- and tri- equivalents.
If you aim for a big event I'd definitely advise doing some small local events in preparation, just so you're not worried by all the pre-event nerves on the big day. The other thing is the big runs like the Great North or city half and full marathons fill up very early on so you need to enter months in advance. Local events you can usually enter on the day.

Massive challenge and I would imagine it would be extremely rewarding to complete.

That is why god invented fatties, you just need to know who your competition is then make sure you beat them.
I think that was his game plan, he tells you to stand still so the bear goes for you whilst he is running like Paula Radcliff for a porta loo!
