Ok, here's a question that's going to get a million (ish!) different answers!

Some of you may have read my thread in the "Lounge" about covering 2.200km on foot in Antarctica ("No cars required!"), but if not, take a look at www.lastgreatchallenge.com

Now, if you were going, which watch would you wear, and why?

Answers on a postcard please...

Sinn use a propriety oil that gives a working temperature range from -45 to +60, most watches will seize up/ slow right down about -20.
Argon filled and dehumidifing capsules prevent fogging.
Waterproof to at least 200m?
You should be able to wear it outside the sleeve so it's practical. Large buttons as you'll be wearing gloves (if it's a chrono).
Good dial visibility.

Try Sinn U2 (2nd time zone), U1000 (12hr chrono), U1 (just the time).

There's good reports of the U2 being used in N Canada in these sorts of temps. They may well be interested in sponsoring your purchase...?

U1

U2

Both U1 & U2

U1000

All available on steel or rubber strap.

I think a Jaeger LeCoultre National Geographic Master would be appropriate!

Love the Kobold, and many polar adventured do wear them - Ben Suanders and Ran Fiennes to name a couple.

Really like the look of the Sinn. I hadn't even thought of them before. How the hell did you know about the temperature details?

Actually, I am quite sold on the Sinn... I feel an email coming on. Are there any stockists in the UK (I know, I should use google but that'll have to wait until later.

As for the G-Shock, well, erm.... I suppose it would tell the time!

About to say that, why do you need to wear a watch on the outside of your clothes, a G-Shock I would have thought would do the job, lots of thingies, stop watch, day, date etc etc.

Just check what the temp will do to the battery, reduce the temp, reduce the output from a battery, I assume it applies to the little batteries in watches, used to work on mines during WWII, as was taught to us on our diving course, build a little moat on the mine with plasticine over the battery compartment, fill with dry ice, (I think), the temp would render the in built battere inoperative, at least they told us that.

Good luck on the treck by the way, I envy you.

www.chronomaster.co.uk/sinn.htm is the UK supplier, Neil is good to deal with by all accounts - as for knowing about the temperature range all I can do is claim 'obsessive compulsion' and leave it at that!

Good luck with your endeavour by the way, I was going to try the North Pole race in 2010 but my wife decided she wanted to do the MdS together, both of which pale into insignificance in comparison. All the best.

You didn't specify anything beyond wanting to go somewhere cold...

My G-Shock was garbage when I wore it in Iraq over a summer TELIC tour. The temperatures were above 50 degC for weeks on end and the display eventually was unreadable.

I know it`s slightly different weather conditions to the environment you`re heading towards but I really wasn`t impressed with it.

It's certainly different!

What's the story with this Omega then?

In terms of practical usage, but you wouldn't wear that in a restaurant, would you? wink

Doesn't sound good. What happened to the display?

The red thing is an aluminium jacket (more pics here: http://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?t=1538...), it's temp rated down to -150 or something silly. You can take the jacket off for going to restaurants!
More details on the history etc here: http://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?t=1387...

I love that Omega Alska project (albeit without the jacket and the white strap!)
