S1 280, when it starts it will do on the 1st turn of the key, idles smoothly, pulls well and temp stays just below 90 and fan kicks in just above 90.

Just recently there has been the odd occasion it refuses to start, it may do if you keep turning the engine over. You can smell fuel so no issues there.

What could it be? Latest non start was Saturday evening, had used it all day and simply wouldn't go. Sunday morning, bonnet open ready to start looking and it starts 1st time!!

I think i'd much prefer it simply didn't start, I could then diagnose the problem and apply a fix. with it being so intermittant it's proving difficult.

Any ideas?

Stuart

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago with my S3 - intermittent non-starting. After some fault finding it led me to the starter motor.

When removed I had it dismantled and reconditioned - it turned out various 'teeth' were missing and when things weren't lined up correctly it caused the non-start.

One fully re-conditioned starter motor later and no further problems - might be worth a check.

Cheers

Do the starting problems relate to the hot days recently?
I'm just thinking fuel vapourisation , I have no idea if the 2.8 suffers from it but see if it goes away now the weather has cooled down a bit.

Thanks for the replies, pretty sure the starter motor is fine, engages without fault and turns the engine over pretty quickly.

Regarding fuel vapourisation, I'll certainly see if vthe cooler weather makes any difference however I can smell fuel after turning the car over for a while which tends to point to an ignition problem.

My investigation will continue!

I think you are on the right track if the engines turning and you smell fuel... check dissy cap and rotor, leads - especially the one from the coil to the dissy - look for chaffing or loose connections on Low tension circuit supply to coil. how good are your plugs? - I'm unsure about 2.8 dissy/points(?) etc...

try starting it up in a dark garage/space with the bonnet up and you will see any HT tracking going on

good luck

After rebuild my s wouldn't start.
It was an ignition problem.
Whilst its playing up, take the king lead off the dizzy and make sure its sparking.
Mine wasn't, it ended up being a bad connector from the dizzy to the duraspark box, hence the box wasn't getting the feed from the little hall sensor in the dizzy.
Worth checking all connectors in the ignition circuit.
good luck
