FIRST TOLLED MOTORWAY IN BRITAIN IS ILLEGAL, SAYS ROBBIE THE PICT
ANGUS MACDONALD
09:00 - 11 December 2003
Drivers should refuse to pay tolls on Britain's first tolled motorway because the tolling regime is illegal, according to Robbie the Pict, who has campaigned against the Skye Bridge tolls for seven years.
Robbie the Pict said that, just like the tolling assignation statement for the Skye Bridge, the tolling concession statement for the M6 toll road which opened on Tuesday to relieve traffic around Birmingham, has not been signed by Government ministers and is therefore illegal.
The campaigner said: "The toll order was published in June 1998. I have seen it and although it is dated, there is no signature from the secretary of state, or from any official acting on his behalf, on the concession statement which allows the tolling company to levy tolls.
"Under the terms of the New Roads and Streetworks Act 1991, it is an offence to levy tolls, where you do not have the authority to do so."............
