Hi all,

I have just been reading the thread that Maxey started and am in a similar position. I am also after a Megabusa (I think), however it is a joint buy between me and my old man. My main problem is the fact that I have never been in one let alone driven one and neither has he. Most of the ones for sale at the momont around the 10k mark are down south and i'm in North Wales. I was wondering is there any kind of owners club or any PH members around my area that I could contact to advise me further.

Cheers,

Ed.

If you are over in Manchester, I have a Westy I can take you in.

Though not a Megabusa, it is fast - COSWORTH turbo powered. I was advised that BEC's are great on track but a lot of people believe that ones with car engines are better for every day use, normal driving etc.

It's for sale at the mo if anyone is interested.

Get in touch with Westfield. They have several demo cars that you could try and they're just outside Birmingham.

Cheers for the info. How much will the Cossie powered one be going for? I think a trip down to Birmingham may well be worth my while. I keep hearing that the BEC's are more for track use than road but do still really like the idea of one. What is it that makes the bike engine cars a pain on the road. If it just that they are not good in traffic and towns etc it wouldn't really bother me as i'm fairly lucky with the roads and places to drive to around here so would rarely be in heavy traffic.

Cheers,

Ed.

My Megablade is a pain in towns and traffic as you can't always get it in neutral once stationary, and the clutch drags slightly, clonking the massive backlash in the driveshaft, due to the agricultural reverse gearbox, which won't always engage reverse when you want it, which might be more often than you think given the lack of available steering lock.

The engine drone really gets on your nerves at any constant speed too, be it 7000 rpm on a DC, or even just pootling through a 30 zone. You find yourself speeding up and slowing down to break the monotony.

But don't let that put you off, like you I have North Wales as my playground smile I am having so much fun that I'm probably not going to bother tracking my car anytime soon, as I originally intended. BECs really shine on roads like these.

I have an R1 powered MK Indy and it is without a doubt the most fun car I have owned, and I have had a LOT of fast cars (EVO 6, RS500, Cossies, Porsche Boxster, TVR Chim etc..).

Yes, you have to rev them to get the most out of them, but that is part of the appeal to me. The acceleration is staggering for the price, then you add in the handling and a BEC is an absolute bargain!

Just my thoughts

A link to my car is here: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1121360.htm

I have it up for £12,500 but offers are welcome. As long as I have enough to buy something else with it (with more than two seats!)

I am not here to get a sale or advertise (as I love BEC's) but I know a lad with a 'Busa and he said it was just too hard to drive and he had problems getting it off the line without stalling. On a track, I bet they are amazing though. That revving must be great...

Birmingham is some distance to go and see a car that you might not like. If you haven't been in a kit car before, you might find that it isn't for you. I travelled to see an Integra and an Elise a few years back and it was a long and disappointing trip home.

If you fancy a trip to Manchester to see the car and have a go in it to see what you think (nothing to do with a possible purchase, merely because it's good fun for me scaring people sh*tless hahaha) then get in touch. I've always loved turbo cars, the noise, the kick in the back, the tunability etc. so to have a Westfield turbo is perfect.

They didn't have any BEC's to take me out in - LOL!

And I still do not understand those who say bike-engines are hard work on the road...they are not whatsoever. It depends how much people use it and what people use it for though I guess! But don't let these views put you off a Busa, they are fantastic.

Any BEC clutch needs a bit of getting used to but I find my Busa no problem at all.

I suppose practice makes perfect. Never driven a BEC myself.

He basically said that he found it difficult to get off the line at normal speeds and had been pulled a few times by coppers who had seen him spinning the wheels (he said you either spin the wheels or stall it) when pulling away.

I'll be honest, it doesn't put me off. I like the idea of a BEC. I was lined up to buy a Hayabusa car (Tiger) myself. I was going to test drive it the same day as I test drove my Westy Cossie (both were within a few miles of each other) but a drive in the Westy convinced me that I had found the car for me.

I my case it has been in 6weeks of ownership, let the clutch out or breakt he chassis reverse mounts, the diff output shaft or the front propshaft...

Mine doesnt want to do full throttle launches at all!

I suppose you only set off once in a race/track day; once rolling then you are fine. I suppose it might just be a bit inconvenient at times when on the road. If you want a BEC, I am sure it's worth putting up with.

(YAWNS) The only thing different about driving a BEC is the clinking of the drivetrain and the noise of the revs, also trickier, note trickier not impossibe, superfast launches dumping the clutch. If people cannot control wheelspin or break drivetrains then there is something wrong with them or the car. Only advice is go for a ride in one for 20 minutes preferably up a dual carraigeway the a busy town centre. Within 10 seconds and 20 minutes you will know wheather you could live with a BEC. I have had two, done over 10,000 miles in them and had very few problems. I would quite happily just jump in it right now and just drive to Monaco. Wouldn't even check the oil, water or tyres first. Just don my suit and helmet and go. If you get a good one they are reliable, indestructible things.

All fair comments...

Though if you lurk on the Yahoo! BEC group, Locost Forums, Westfield forum, or even here on PistonHeads for long enough, you'll also get a picture of how many (few?) good ones there are and how much sorting the bad ones can take.

Tales of woe are far from unusual...

Thanks for all the varied views, I think a BEC sounds like something I could happily live with but I certainly don't want to end up with one that will give me loads of problems. I'm okay with the tools but don't have the time or patience.
Thank you for the kind offer David/Beast, I may take you up on it in the next few weeks if we get a sunny weekend. What is the issue with the gearbox, is it very noticable?
I think if the right BEC preferably Megabusa came along I would buy it, the problem is I really wouldn't know what I was looking for to find out if it is good one. Are factory built ones generally better?

Too many questions confused

Cheers,

Ed

Not so many complaints on the Sylva forums (or from my many friends with Fury, Phoenix, Striker and R1ot. Maybe there is a lesson in that....... :-)

Not to many complaints on the locost forum either.

My last engine spent 6 years in the chassis (893 blade) and now lives in a westfield, during my time 3 clutches and a new 4th gear dog when it came out & before it went into the westfield.

Engine did numerous track days, was regularly thrashed to within a inch of its life last thing it did in my ownership was a 6 hour 2 up endurance event at Mallory (alleged BEC killer) only thing that held us up there was 2 separate CEC rod thru side oil on circuit type blow ups. One BEC broke down during the event, water pump failure.
