OK don't shoot me down for this but need to know before I go and ruin the car!

I have just finished building an MNR Vortx that has just gone through it's SVA and hope to have my registration doc's next week.

During the build the gel coat has got a few scratches from being lifted on and off about 1000 times! I have been told today that G3 could remove them and restore the bodywork.

My question's are:

Is G3 the same as T cut or will T cut be too abrasive on the gel coat
Will the gel coat loose it's shine and if so what can I do to get it back

G3 works fine for me on boats & caravans so no reason why it shouldn't work on your car.
It isn't the same as T-cut & I don't use T-cut at all.
For polishing out imperfections/reducing texture/polishing the surface after 1500/3000 wet flatting after painting I use G3 with a machine & a compounding foam. Be careful to keep it moving to avoid localised heat build up - a water spray is also handy - and be certain to keep checking as you can remove a lot of material very quickly! A polishing foam would be less aggressive & might be your best starter.

Thanks for the reply, can you tell me what polishing foam is. This is all a bit new to me......as you can tell.

I do spend hours washing and waxing my cars but have never had to go this far so new territory for me

This may be of help. Don't worry too much about using their own polishing mops (aka foams)

The white foams are the hardest, pink are softer & the black ones softest for final finishing either with G10 (or similar) or a polish suitable for machine use.

Thanks paintman, I guess it is better to use a foam rather than do it by hand

G3 paste is a pretty hardcore compound.

If you're starting out, maybe try the easier and more workable compounds like Menzerna 3.02 Intensive Polish or 3M Fast Cut Plus. That said, I have no idea what would work well with gel coat, but G3 paste is a bit of a blunt instrument in the wrong hands wink G10 would be a better starting point, perhaps, and see what that removes.

As with all things, proceed with care & if in doubt don't.
G3 and G10 (and whatever their equivalents are in other makers products are) are best used with foams as using them on cloths tends to increase the cut & can leave unwanted swirls & marks.
There are indeed many other products out there, but the main items I see in bodyshops & in Motor Factors (incl the Factors I used to work for) are either Farecla or 3M. The only notable exception - and this is going back to the mid-70s before 2k paints, so I am talking cellulose and synthetic enamels - was Brasso.

I might try some Brasso on a wool pad for a laugh. wink

I used some suncream once (in the interests of science and experimentation), as it contained enough titanium dioxide to give a small amount of cut and enough oil for lubricating the pad. Bodyshop (Anita Roddick not paint spray centre!) face mask also worked well because of its kaolin content - a heavier cut than Ambre Solaire. Toothpaste didn't work. Not enough cut and foamed too much. biggrin

G3 paste is one of the most aggressive cuts around which can work wonders in the right hands .

G10 is one of the finest cuts around .

I found that the range needs a medium cut after using G3 really which it lacks .

You might get more joy from the Meguiars range of compounds which cover hobby detailers right upto the pro range , the only down fall is there is a hell of a choice and can become confusing thou .

The Meguiars compounds are more friendly to use than G3 .
