Hi guys put a post on the other week explaining that 1999 318(e46)ran like crap especially when cold. The problem turned out to be the MAF.I put a new one on and it now goes like stink again. However now when the car warms up it idles very low around the 500rpm mark though it never actually stalls. There is no hesitation when acceleratiing from idle it just doesnt feel right when idling. Also I think it is deffinatley using more fuel than before fitting new MAF.

sounds like you have a air leak. we have had the same problem on two cars and it turned out to be the breather valve assembly on the inlet manifold. diaphrams perish just follow the cam box vent pipe at the back of the engine its what the pipe goes to.think about £50 ish half a hour to fit .

Not sure about the 1.8's but maybe the idle control valve could do with a clean with some WD40.

Sounds like an air leak to me too. double check all the connections from the intake point all the way to the throttle body for hissing etc.

I took all my intake bits off to find one of the rubber tube sections has a lot of cracks around the top of it which I think is allowing a small amount of air to escape when the engine is hot.

mine starts and idles fine however if I've been out driving stop the car turn it off and then turn it on within a short amount of time <10 mins it idles very low but then goes back to it's normal idle speed around 900rpm I think this is due to the rubber hose part expanding when hot.

investigation ensues.

mine is an E36 btw.

well, mine was an air leak too, one of the jubilee clips on my induction kit had come loose/forgot to be tightened either way problem solved.

did you find out what your problem was?

Just an update on the idling problem.I had actually replaced the breather pipes etc about 3 months back.Anyway reading through similar posts a few people had the same problems and suggested I checked the lamda sensors.Checked and replaced the front lamda and everything is perfect again.
