I have no idea where this should go.....

I am in need of a 2 man lightweight tent for use in the UK...Not for snow use, but it might need to be used in winter occasionally.

Anyone have any suggestions of decent, but relativley low cost tents? I dont really want to spend much more than 150....

Im not sure what the "quality" brands actually are anymore....there seem to be so many!

Now what exactly is wrong with a perfectly decent 5-star hotel?

Lot's of good brands available, if you want light weight and two man, bear in mind that it will cost more than £150. Probably the cheapest is the Vango Force Ten Helium 200 - light and very hardy. TeraNova make good tents while they work, but they break very quickly due to the light weight materials and they cost a lot. From personal experience their "Lifetime warranty" isn't worth the paper it is written on, don't go there. Marmot do a nice lightweight one as well, but then you are very quickly into the £260 range. Bonus about the Vango is that it has external poles so you pitch it in the rain (useful in the UK).

VauDe Taurus sounds ideal for your needs. Poles on outside, all in one pitching, and weighs half of nothing. Think they're about £130 from Field and Trek.

I needed a tent recently and had similar requirements to you, except not winter use. I needed it to fit in the back of my 7 when touring around Europe.

I ended up getting a Vango Banshee 300. It cost £85 and is a "3 man" tent, so in fact is suited for 2 people. I'm 6'1" and can just sit up straight in it. The clincher for me was that it folds down to 45x15x15cm and only weighs 2.5kg. The bag has compression straps so you can make it slightly smaller still. It's good in the heat too because it has lots of vents. If there's even a slight breeze you'll feel it inside with the vents all open.

This is it:

If you can accept more weight and a larger pack the Vango Typhoon 300 looked pretty good when I was looking at it in the shop and it's a lot more sturdy than the Banshee. It's about £160.

That one looks like this:

+1. Vaude tents are spot on.

We have got a Hogan XT. Like the Hogan: but with an extended porch for cooking in or putting the dog in.

Pitches in minutes and fully weather proof.

Khyam Ranger tent. £95, 4kg, sleeps 2 and erects in well under a minute. http://www.campingworld.co.uk/Models.aspx?ModelID=...

or the Khyam Highlander tent. £120, 4.7kg, sleeps 3 and again, erects in well under a minute. http://www.campingworld.co.uk/Models.aspx?ModelID=...

Or the Igloo. £145, 5.6kg, sleeps 3 and yes, under a minute again. http://www.campingworld.co.uk/Models.aspx?ModelID=...

I rate Khyam tents very very highly for almost all UK conditions.

Another vote for the Khyam. I have had the igloo type for over 15 years and still going good. We have just upgraded to a larger one that we can stand up in rather than crouching down to get in it.

I use a Lightwave Trek T2 XT - loads of room for two people and a massive awning for rucksacks/bikes etc. Weighs less than 3kg and I do all four seasons in the same tent.

It also comes with square anodised gold pegs - which are uber cool and don't bend.

I'm a Duke of Edinburgh's Award Supervisor and Assessor so it gets a fair bit of use and has never let me down - I think it's a quality bit of kit. They aren't the cheapest, but are good value for money.

I used to sell tents and we had more Khyams returned than anything else. Their one selling point was the erection speed that was achieved by the umbrella type action with loads of little clips that lock into place. All these clips add loads of weight (4+kg is not lightweight) and give loads of things to break.

I used one in adverse conditions once and it was rubbish. It blew around in the slightest breeze and leaked.

Something like the Vaude or Vangos above is a much better design. It's much stronger and an external frame is almost as quick to put up.

Well worth spending £50 or so more.

Why do you need a tent?.

Man up FFS! have you not seen bear grylls you sleep up a tree or in a hole if your going on an outdoor adventure. If your not then use a hotel. Worst case senario sleep in the car. To the guy who bought a tent for touring europe in a 7 then fair enough there is an exception to the rule you can't quite sleep in a 7.

I was going to recommend a Kyham Igloo too.

Ours stood up to the abuse a number of years of camping for 6 weeks straight each year down in Cornwall being battered by the wind, rain, sun and salt.

Have a TerraNova Superlight - not had any problems, ultra light weight for hiking with. Used for a number of year for 4 nights each year and odd days up at home.
It was the lightest 2 man tent out there a few years back.
