Just looking to hear of any experiences PHers have had with the AA warranty.

I bought my car with a VGS warranty (privately), and despite checking with VGS and Racing Green that this was fully transferable to me, VGS are refusing to transfer it.

I've received a one-line letter and no explanation after both the previous owner, Racing Green and I checked that they would transfer it. RG has a further chat with them on my behalf and were very helpful, but the upshot is a "no" from VGS.

As a practising solicitor, I'm considering suing them just to make the point that they can't go back on their word and have people relying on their representations, but that's a story for another day.

I would like to have some sort of cover for electrics, clutches, radiators, etc and the AA seems to be an option.

A search on PH itself doesn't seem to reveal a lot about the AA warranty.

I called the AA today who quoted me their 5 Star Prestige Policy which in a nutshell is £519 for 2 years, with a claim limit of the retail value of the car and an individual claim limit of £3,000 per claim.

I made specific queries about whether it would cover a rebuild and was told by salesperson it would, to the tune of the £3,000 limit. This sounded very dubious to me, given the old "it's an inherent design flaw" argument so I asked to speak to a manager, who confirmed that it would NOT be covered. So, issues already without even taking policy out!

However, further discussion revealed that clutches, etc are covered. Given the little hiccup in the previous para, I am not convinced.

Has anyone had:

1. Clutch
2. Radiator
3. Electrics
4. Shocks

or similar replaced under an AA warranty for their TVR?

£519 is pretty damned good value for two years, and I think my clutch will go the next time I am stuck in Goodwood-like gridlock (2 hours of hillstarts and inching!), so want to cover myself from now.

I love my T350, but I know it's likely to pinch my wallet eventually. Just looking to cover myself as sensibly as possible.

Is the AA warranty an option, or will they wiggle out of it you think? I wouldn't even attempt an engine rebuild claim, but what about 1 - 5 above?

personally I would save my money as they will wriggle at every claim. Work on Tvr's are getting cheaper if you shop around.

Considering your a solicitor I am amazed your even contemplating using a bunch of gangsters who hide behind the vehicle warranty practice. Yes they will pay out if the part has absolutely no chance of being broken by wear and tear and that is not many depending how you look at it. Some on here will say they worked for me but many wont. They are there to make money not be your guardian angel

Bit like solicitors I suppose hehe

Yes a clutch is covered on some warranties but they dont cover them for wearing out they will only cover for mechanical breakdown eg springs breaking apart or in some maybe oil contamination from a "covered part" breaking down. They are NOT a service contract, I wouldn't bother paying for one they really are a waste of money.

I feel that too much is made out of Tvr/speed 6 unreliability! to the point where it can actually ruin the fun of owning the car,(Im 4 years into Tvr ownership without any nasty surprises so far (touch wood), You have done the right thing by buying an 05 model, you have done your homework before you purchased, as I remember your posts going back 12-18 months ago ,hopefully you warm the engine properly before driving hard as im sure you well know. Having said all that The AA cover sounds good for the price, maybe too good to be true.

Precisely my thinking. I've done my homework and bought an excellent car, which I am taking care of.

The question here really is, is £250 a year gamble worth the arguably good chance of saving me a potential bucket load in the future?

It's the price that attracts me to it, combined with the fact that a few people seem to have had pay outs.

I'm wildly litigous, so I have perhaps a better chance of getting them to cough up if anything!

Have always heard good things about the AA warranty paying up quickly on clutch/rad/shocks claim's, sound's a good deal with a 3k limit, the huge annual premium that the competition charge has little bearing on the quality of service provided, read the small print carefully in the unlikely event anything will go wrong! rolleyes

What excuse was given for not transferring the existing warranty to the new owner?

None.

One line letter saying that they "exercise the right to refuse to transfer the warranty".

I have no issue with them doing that. The issue I have is with them saying to three different parties (including me), that they would transfer the warranty to me for that particular car, having looked at their records for that particular ref. number - only to renege upon their word.

RG looked into it for me and apparently, they claimed that it was because "they didn't have all the facts" (i.e. that previous owner had made a clutch claim for which they paid out, but they hadn't updated their records) when they told me they would transfer it.

That of course, doesn't give them any real defene but I believe it speaks volumes for their integrity and perhaps is an indication of how they would treat a claim in any event.

I'd like to make clear that I am not naming and shaming anyone here, for all I know they could be God's gift to the lot of us. I am simply retelling the facts I was requested for with my conclusion on it.

I think most of us familiar with the AA Warranty relates to the breakdown warranty with 5 x £500 claims p.a. £25 excess taken out with breakdown cover for cars <10 yrs and 100k miles.
Yours looks v. good value however!

We all know the risks with Speed Six issues, but stating that it has an inherent design flaw, would that argument legally hold water? Are the issues documented by the manufacturer? rolleyes Could the flaws be proven?

There are many mainstream cars that could be described the same way, but surely they would pay out on those?
As an example we had a 2.2 petrol vectra that ate its timing chain a few years back, it was repaired under warranty with no question - that was a design flaw with poor oil feed to the timing chain with no indication of any problem until it goes out to lunch.

Surely if you have a warranty that lists specific parts that are covered (and all the ones I've seen do) and its taken out against a speed six then there's some sort of contractual obligation.

no doubt there's a get out of jail free in the small print

I've got one ... and they work. £519 for 2 years and £3k per claim is eye-poppingly good value. BUY IT!

Could we have a few examples of where they have worked?

Can you get a warranty for just a year?

It just feels "too soon" to let her go completely and take her off the profile! I miss that sweet little turbo. Will probably buy her back one when I have the space.

So far, T350T has been fantastic and I am dying to explore 6000 - 8000 rpm sometime soon. Completely reliable so sod a lack of warranty for the time being and pray I am not tempting fate! Picture of T350 can be found in my garage though... wink

Glad your enjoying her advocatus, Once the speed 6 paranoia goes away you will really start to enjoy her properly! I was a little anxious for the first couple of months but I relish every drive now! (24 months later) Think I might go for a blast when I get home from work.

The wilder the better I guess. Engines need revs.
