My Chimaera 500 had a brand new gearbox fitted at 5000 miles when 5th gear decide to stop working all together.

My 'new' gearbox now apparently needs a new 5th gear synchro as it 'graunches' every time 5th is selected. Are these Borg Warner T5 boxes really this unreliable or am I just unlucky?

I'm thinking of going to the dark side, selling up and buying an M3 or Lancer EVO VII .... Please remind me why I shouldn't!

Come over to the Dark Side. We'll show you the light (hhmmm!)

EVO VII, excellent choice or possibly the new Impreza STi?

Just take a test drive... just 1... it's all you'll need.

No! Don't do it!!!

You've just been unlucky. Yes the previous boxes would have problems - usually 5th from the experiences I've seen, but there'll be plenty who will tell you how many miles their gearbox has done without problem (possibly just mentioning the known difficulty of getting it into reverse sometimes - and there's a technique for that, it's in the wrist action, of course!).

How can you think of getting rid?

You need the roof off and a good thrash to get the adrenalin going and to remember why you bought it in the first place.

I couldn't bring myself to buy one of those ... can't even type the bl**dy name.

You can't do it!

I've had 3 TVR T5 boxed cars and done 16,000, 10,000 and 27,000 in them and no problems at all. You're the first person I've heard of with 5th gear failure at these kinds of miles so I think you are unlucky. Take heart, my Volvo C70GT went through 4 gearboxes in the first 50,000 miles before they could find one that didn't whine (bit like wives really!!!!!)

Buy such a car if you wish but first , ask yourself these questions .....
1) Do you have a personality similar to Steve Davis ?
2) Do you look in the mirror and see nothing ?
3) Do you carry passengers for reward ?

If your answers have been yes to all these questions then proceed you are just the candidate to own a "boring , faceless Jap-taxi" !!!

The technique I use to select reverse, is to fist put the car in 3rd and then go to reverse. Works every time with no grinding.
By the way my previouse griff had done 120k on the original box when I sold it. New owner says it's still going strong. Had to rebuild the engine though.
I used to use red line synthetic oil for the box and change it every 6 or 7k, wonder if this has any influence on gearbox life? Maybe we should start a thread on different types of gearbox oil.
Quinny.

I use first gear, on the basis I never need to get into first in a hurry so if I'm going to wear a synchro out, I'd rather it was that one.

Cheers,
Peter Humphries (and a green V8S)

Ditto. I select first gear before reverse. Never crunches.
And onto the subject in hand;

VMax, do you REALLY need reminding why you bought a TVR?

A tidalwave of torque when you put your foot on the loud pedal......
If there WAS a noise that happened when 'all Hell breaks loose', it would be like that which emits from a TVR's exhaust....
Jaw-dropping looks........
Turns heads where ever go, without fail.....

Need I go on?

I keep reading how many 'unlucky' TVR owners there are out there. I think if you took the time just to look at the number of threads on these boards that read 'help, my TVR is costing me a fortune and I'm at my wits end' then you'd see one of the major disadvantages to owning one of the marque.

Now, I'm not into TVR bashing, 'cos I still like the cars, however IMHO it's the dealer network that need to get sorted out. I think everyone accepts that the cars have some 'issues', but this would sooo much easier to stomach if the dealers were better.

I'm sure some owners have had excellent service, but I know of many, myself included, who were either blatantly ripped off or just treated badly, overcharged and have received very poor technical advice. I used several dealers in my quest for a good one, and in the end gave up.

I used main dealers for the servicing of my Griff, something I now regret. I think TVR should take a more pro active role in screening the dealerships to ensure a consistent high level of service, and technical expertese. At the current time, I believe, TVR has little or no quality control over the dealerships.

I know this is distorting the thread's original theme, but in terms of driving down the cost of ownership (excuse the poor pun) I think this could be a big factor. It remains tobe seen how reliable the Tuscan and Tamora are? ;-) (Any Tuscan owners care to comment?).

I do think the unhappy owner threads need to be put into context. (me? 2 griffs, over 9 years)

i.e. how many people do you see complaining vs happy owners.

over 3000 griffs have been sold
over 12000 chims have been sold

cerberas, tuscans don't know the numbers, but just on observation of the threads, their must be a lot of happy owners.

I was part of the tuscan e-group for a while, but it just turned into whose got the best colour, most power, better wheels debate, after the early days.

I do agree with the issue of dealers. It does appear that the dealer network is changing for the better now.
As the price of the cars (and performance) have gone up a better stanadrd of dealer is required.

My main concern is the cost of routine servicing. (even including independants)

If you were to do just 6 - 12 k miles a year in a modern TVR, the routine annual service costs will run into thousands.

This will hurt TVR sales in the future, as the cars get driven more, and compared with other sports cars (perhaps less exciting ones) ie. Boxster S, etc (soon to get more power)

For example, what is the annual routine service cost for a boxster S.

In my griff if I were to do 12000 miles year, it would be around £1300, assuming 1 major, 1 minor.

That is a lot on top of any other consumables/issues, tyres, etc.

WHAT ARE YOU ALL TALKING ABOUT ,THE ONLY WAY TO SELECT
REVERSE ON ALL TVR's IS FIRST PUT IT IN TO 5th AND STRAIGHT IN TO REVERSE. SORTED!
AS FOR GEAR BOX PROBLEMS THIS DOSE HAPPEN SOMETIMES IN 5th ITS JUST YOUR LUCK.
AND DONT CHANGE YOUR TVR FOR A JAP REP MOBILE,I HAVE OWNED AND DRIVEN LOTS OF PERFORMANCE CARS AND THEIR IS ONLY ONE THAT HITS HOME AND ITS A TVR TUSCAN.
PS IF YOUR SERVICING COSTS ARE HIGH TELEPHONE DREADNOUGHT TVR THEY OFFER THE BEST SERVICE FOR ANY TVR.

Caps Lock!!

There was very good point made by Pete Humphries! If your going to wear out the Synchro, wear out first! not 5th or 3rd! First. I had the same prob on my first Astra all I had to do is put it in 1st then into reverse! Easy!!!
