I think it is possible.
If it is anything like my r129, it is not necessary. The bracket fell off about three years ago while I was tootling through Preston, Lancs and it has been fine ever since. I keep meaning to buy a new rear exhaust section but at £600 I'm in no hurry.

I can understand the reluctance to replace the rear box, on the E-Class it is only £430. But... it is noticibaly daggling down on the side with the broken bracket and I don't fancy taking it on hols round the Lake District when it looks like it might part company with the rest of the car at any moment. Plus knowing my luck it would damage the middle section which I think is over £1500.
Should be weldable. The main stealer once told me the bracket supporting the Catalyst on my C Class was broken and I needed a new Cat......at which point they were told no I didn't and they could just weld it up for me.
Lasted me another 4 years and was still fine when my dad got rid of the car 2 years after I sold it to him.
