I think it would be difficult due to the "double-action" opening, but also as the bonnet is quite light and wobbly it's probably not stiff enough to be closed against a gas strut anyway.

I'm not sure why you'd want to get rid of the standard support though, other than because it gets hot (in which case fit a bit of rubber pipe around a bit of it) or because it gets in the way when working on the car, in which case it's only a 10 second job with a second pair of hands to lift the whole bonnet off anyway.

It would just seem nice to have it open and stay open without the metal coat hanger ;-)
