As above. I'm off to Rome soon with the OH and want a decent hotel to stay in near all the touristy bits for about £100-£130 per night. Can anyone recommend anything. We're also thinking of spending a couple of days by a beach or lake not too far away. I've heard good things about Sperlonga, but has anyone any other advice to offer?

Can't give a personal recommendation (yet at least) but I've just booked a room at the Forum Hotel based on scouring www.tripadvisor.co.uk. That worked out to be about £130 per night for what I hope will be half decent.

Previously I've stayed in the Intercon, Hotel de Ville, right by the Spanish Steps but £1300 for 5 nights was a bit OTT.

Can't speak of the other areas; I never seem to find time to get outside of the city whenever I go there.

I'm staying here in a few weeks http://www.hotelcapodafrica.com/capoenglish.html which is "in the shadow of the Colosseum", cost is £120-130 per night. It gets good reviews on Trip Advisor etc.

Sorry, should have used the search facility rolleyes but in my defence I was in a bit of a rush this morning when I posted. Thanks for the recommendations but they seem to be either a bit pricey for our travel dates or fully booked. After looking through trip advisor I have booked us into the Hotel Internazionale right by the Spanish Steps.

When are you going? I read the reviews on tripadvisor and it's almost making me think of changing...the prices are very similar in August. Looks like you might have found a good one there. Do report back.

We'll be staying there between the 23rd and 25th July so I'll let you know our verdict when we return. Just trying to find somewhere by a beach or lake for a couple of days now but all the decent hotels seem to be booked up.

The River Palace was excellent, the rooms were a bit small but it didn't really matter, the amount of walking you do in a day it's just somewhere to sleep. The hotel was spotlessly clean and very friendly. Would definitely go back there.
