Ex police cars - good buy?

Teh ex authority vehicles thred prompted me to post.
I've mate who is convinced an ex police Discovery is the way forward. I've put him in touch with another mate who back in the day had an ex traffic Rover 827 with he says was nothing but and abused and rattly heap of trouble.
So are ex cop cars a good buy?
I am thinking not. Some former Panda car that's been thrown aroudn some council estate for 3 years with multiple non-ownign drivers and puking pissing passengers.
Perhaps a traffic car is a better bet.
Also, to help my mate out, does anyone have links to dealers that retail ex police stock.

They are regularly hammered (just look at any of the 'Cops' programmes, they are always bouncing off the limiter), the boot is full of equipment all the time, they are just a work vehicle to the Police so doubt if they get the respect their own cars do, they have regular dings and although serviced regularly they do alot of miles in a short time, very few of it at a nice relaxed 70mph on the motorway. They will also have holes all over the inside.

Be wary of cars with odd ball specifications though as these can be a nightmare to sell on. Vauxhall used to be especially bad with Astra, Vectra and Omega. Low spec cars with the sports interior or high spec with no air con were common and Astra was often fitted with a vinyl/faux leather interior presumably for wipe clean reasons...
We sold an Omega MV6 years back that had been a traffic car. Proper spec and the usual calibrated speedo, bigger alternator etc. The car was immaculate and VERY cheap!

i bought a ex police 2.6 vetcra about 5 years ago when and it wasn't very cheap either. looked good when i bought it. 2 months later i had to sell it for £500 making a 4k loss in 2 months as the whole engine and ecu failed and couldn't get a qoute less than 2k!
i tried to px it just before it failed as didn't get on with the car and because it was ex police no one would touch it and the best offer i got for it was 2k then when i was trying to sell it just before i put it put for sale it went bang.
don't bother honestly cars are cheap enough at the moment not to have to buy tat.

Even though our cars carry a lot of weight, they don't get hammered speed wise. They accelerate to get off the hard shoulder then cruise at 60 mph. We're not allowed to speed so our cars don't get thrashed.

I picked up an ex police Rover 827 many years ago G333 VUU IIRC.
Excellent car cost me peanuts to keep on the road for a couple of years and managed to sell it to a Taxi firm for just about what I paid for originally.
It was very good at clearing the outside line on motorways, you would see people look in their mirror snd pull over very quickly.

I have said it everytime this topic comes up, they arn't really seen as cars, more tools.
Traffic cars are likely to have been in a bump or crunch as some point and could have quite easily been absolutely thrashed from cold etc etc.
Could be a good workhorse though if that's all you want.
I have 2 ex plod Omegas, a 3.2 Manual (2003) that I bought for £1500 with 100k on the clock, done about 10k in it and its never missed a beat, and also have a 3.2 estate Auto (2001) with just over 100k, that drives just as well too, cost me £1000.
As with any second hand car purchase you take your chances, both mine came with a full printout of everything, and I mean everything, that has been done to them, right down to bulbs being changed.
