Morning all, could I have some help with some problem solving please? wink

So...2001 (ish) Giant ATX 850 hardtail with Formula Cable Discs on what I assume to be a formula specific hub..

The cable discs are useless and always have been, so I changed the fronts for Deore hydraulic discs...
When I went to put the Deore discs on the wheel they didn't fit as they had a different stud pattern (4 instead of 6 IIRC).
So, I then put the old Formula rotor on the wheel, which didn't fit inside the caliper (too big a diameter by a few mm).
This then resulted in me buying a whole new front wheel and using the full Deore system... which is ok...

Now... the rear wheel is shot, and I imagine it would the same again if I wanted to replace the rear wheel (and keep useless cable discs) I would need to source a hub/rotor with the same pattern as the Formula cable discs from long long time ago.
The other option being I buy a whole new wheel (need to anyway) and updgrade the rear discs to Deore (or similar price)... which I would imagine even for a basic wheel stands me at about £150?

Or, as we all like shiny new things, do I just go and buy a new Giant XTC 4 or 4.5 for £450/£400 respectively!!

Any way to keep costs down on this?

Thanks in advance! smile

p.s I am hoping to get the bike out on Silverstone for the Macmillan sponsored ride on 30th july, so not looking for any long lead time action!

Merlin can supply a front & rear Shimano Deore wheelset for £80
http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/mountain-and-road-bi...

and a full front & rear Shimano LX disc brake set for £105.

As Merlin mainly deal in OEM kit, if you ring them i'm sure they'd be happy to split the packs above to send you just the rear wheel and rear brake for roughly half the price, It should cost you about £100 for what you need I'd imagine.

Or, try ebay.

Thanks wildcards, I am going to take it into a bike shop tomorrow to get their opinion and make sure that it isn't a standard fit on the back (in which case, just a new wheel... which Merlin look good for at those prices).
Once I get that sorted I can decide what I am going to do... low down the list would be leaving it with the bike shop to source and fit whatever components they see fit nono

The Giant XTC 4 is still a potential... current bike is in effect 12 years old (insurance replacement from the 1997 ATX850)... so it can be 'rested' without thinking I've wasted any money!

thumbup Always nice to get a new bike, but it's also nice to know it isn't the only option if you're on a budget.

Merlin have some cracking deals at the moment.

I rang them about a replacement headset for my Merlin Malt 1.

I ordered a FSA XL2 on Tues which was about £22, I didn't want to spend too much. They rang me yesterday to say they were out of stock, do you want a Race Face Dues instead at no extra cost, looked on website, on offer at £35 down from £77! Ok I said that will be fine, arrived today. Excellent service. Just got to fit it now frown

Further to my comments above about not leaving it with the bike shop....

I left it with the bike shop wink

The guy is going to fit me a new Deore disc on the rear, whip the cassette off the old wheel and put it on new wheel (could do with a fresh one, but in the future I'll replace chain and cassette...), set up the new brake (appreciate that takes moments...)... and roberts your fathers brother, should be ready by lunch tomo!

Going to cost £145 for the wheel and rear disc set... which is probably about £30 more than I should have paid... but the bike was in the shop already and more than happy to leave it there and come back with it fixed!

£145 to supply parts, swap over existing items, adjust gears, fit and adjust a new disc brake. Seems a good price.

Now get out and ride it.
