Cheaper filters - a false economy?

[clonmult]

Having just got started on the digital SLR, I'm thinking of trying some filters.

7Dayshop have a few - star effect, polarizer, ND2/4, all for under a fiver - I realise that they won't be optically as good as the Hoyas and others, but surely they'll at least be useful for getting used to the effects available without actually killing off my bank account?
