Compression fault?

Has he had a compression test done to verify this?

My money would be on a sticky IMV(*) on the fuel pump.

As far as i know yes. Is there any way of checking if that valve is at fault?

More often than not, if you just loosen the two mounting screws a few mm, wiggle the valve about a bit and retighten it, this will re-seat the valve properly and will cure the problem.

The screws are a real PITA to get to though!
