Hi all,

I have just started noticing a problem with one side of my back end going floppy (sorry for the expression!) when the handbrake is applied.

One side comes up as it should, but the other drops.

Has anyone ever heard of this before?

Anyone got any suggetions?

Thanks,

Ashley.

It's most likely it only grabbing on one side.
A plus point is you can put the handbrake on, gently nudge the clutch against it at traffic lights, and it'll tilt like a '68 Dodge Charger

Mine does this, even after new rear discs pads and handbrake shoes. Admittedly it isn't as bad as it was before, but reckong I need to adjust the cable tension to rectify.

Don't overlook the need to 'bedding-in' the handbrake new pads, just as any other brake. IIRC the copy of the E34 manual I have basically tells you to apply the handbrake, drive 200m, then re-adjust!

Makes good sense if you think about it - there is essentailly no wear-in otherwise.

Mine has been doing this for at least the last 6 months.

Been for a service aswell. I mentioned it but nothing came of it.

Mine does exactly the same. Not that I ever do, but don't trust the handbrake on a hill when you get out, it'll only be braking on 1 rear wheel. I always leave it in gear.

Ultimately most cars I've ever owned have done this at some point. But it's always sorted in about 15mins with either a 10mm spanner on an adjuster one side, or (first) a dab of grease on the cable Y-shaped 'splitter' (if fitted). It really is that simple.

As others have said ,sounds like only one side is working properly .You need to get the rear brakes adjusted up properly and then re-set the handbrake cable .If that doesn't work then its time to start spending money!
