Heater controls....

Hi Guys....

I'm trying to get my head around the heater/ventilation controls in the Griff and to be honest, I'm a little lost.

Its mostly around the fan speed control! If I press the knob in, the car starts its demist where the fan blows air upto the windows, heats the wing mirrors and puts the little red LED on. However, if I try to adjust the fan speed in non-demist mode nothing seems to happen, the knob just spins round and round with no resistance, clicking or air coming out of the vents. Also, sparadically the car seems to turn the wing mirror heaters!

- Am I doing something wrong
- Should the knob be 'clicking' to indicate different fan speeds or is it a vari-speed?
- Does the wing mirror heaters have a mind of their own?

Which model Griff do you have? On the 500 the fan speed knob doesn't click around it just turns, there's no notable resistance. You should hear the fan motor noise increase as it turns clockwise.

The heated mirrors come on every time you turn on the heater blower.

Not sure what you mean by 'demist mode' the direction of the air is controlled by one of the other controls which isn't linked to any of the other controls. They all operate independtly.

There should be full instructions in the owners manual if you've got one.

They come on for 10 mins each time you switch on the blower, but tell us which model/year Griff you have.

The mirrors also turn off should you open a door.

Are you sure the knob has not just come undone from the shaft and is spinning. There is a grub screw that locks it onto a flat face of it. The clicking could be the screw just rising up over that.

My fan controls work just as you described, agree with zippy sounds as if the grub screw has come loose and the control knob is just spinning on the spindle.

OK assuming you have a Griff 500 with 4 x alloy knobs, here's the basics;

1) Top left controls the temperature of the heater should be marked with a red & green led turn it for hot & cold. (pressing it also controls on/off the air conditioning if you have it fitted)
2) Bottom left opens and closes the fresh air flap allowing you to have either fresh air or recirculated air. Anti clockwise fully is fresh air which is what you will want.
3) Top right controls the fan speed and is turned on / off by pressing it. (pressing it also controls the heated mirrors)
4) Bottom right directs air feet or screen vents and should be self explanatory (pressing also controls the heated seats if you have them)

Which it is....

Grub screw seems in place and the nob seems to be firmly attached. Everything else seems to work I just dont get a lot of air coming through the vents or any real descernable fan noise regardless of how much nob twizzling I do...

Now, re-read that last paragraph - hummmmm could be considered risque if taken out of context

Sorry - I call the bit where the car pumps loads of hot air onto the screen via the top vents as 'demist mode' - yet to be tested in anger but I'm sure the british summer will present an opportunity shortly....

I think you're expecting too much. It doesn't have a "demist mode" or "non-demist mode" as such, you have to turn on then adjust the blower to full speed yourself and direct the air to the screen vents with the other knob. If you don't turn the fan on, then it will not blow and turning the knob will do nothing. Don't you get the handbook (and the service record) with the car?
