Last Friday I turned the PS3 on and popped my newly purchased copy of Ghostbusters into the slot and nothing happens. Put in out in out a few times and nothing .. Try other disks still nothing.

I get online and have a read and it seems blue ray failure isn’t uncommon and as I got my PS3 in March ’08 it seems there will a £145 charge for an exchange.

I rang Sony on Monday and the first pleasant surprise is that it’s a more agreeable £99 for a repair rather than exchange ( Id rather keep my unmarked machine than swap it for one that’s spent its previous life being kicked around a teenagers bedroom ). The chap on the phone asks when I got the machine and if I still have the receipt. If I did they may do an under warranty repair ! Went into Currys on the way home and they gave me a copy. Faxed that off to Sony yesterday and they’ve just confirmed the machine will be picked up Monday for a repair with no charge to me !!

Thanks Sony !

sony wanted to charge me 145. Which is silly really. So instead of that i got a continous play warrenty on it for £4.99 and got a new ps3 about a week later and its fine i then just canceled my monthly £4.99 and every 1 a winner. So if your PS3 is broke dont pay sony get a continous play warrenty £4.99 is better then £145

Link says.....

Dear Continuous Players, we set up this service ultimately to provide a fast, efficient and cost effective way to ensure that your experience with PlayStation 3 & PSP was as seamless and hassle free as possible. Unfortunately, some individuals have chosen to abuse this service and as a consequence we feel that we have no option but to suspend Continuous Play and postpone acceptance of new Continuous Play plans until further notice. We will of course honour existing customer's policies and look to amend the existing provision so that it is less vulnerable to exploitation. Sincere apologies

PlayStation Team

.... um...appears it might be your fault wink

Not quite sure I'm seeing where the credit is due.

A core functional component of a system fails and you are happy that you only get charged £99 after 15 months?

The word 'utter fanboy' spring to mind.

Now not intending to cause a console argument, but at least MS have recognised a central fault and extended the warranties for 3 years, as well as providing an excellent pick up and return service at no cost to the consumer.

I would certainly be challenging Sonys £99 fee, as you would reasonably expect the equipment to last more than 15 months (isn't there some legislation covering this?)

Ahhh.. if you read the post you'll see that its being repaired FOC.

Im certainly no 'fanboy'. I play Wii, 360, PS3 and PC and no particular affinity to any of them. What I was impressed with was the fact that Sony are repairing the machine outside warranty.

Well I suppose I should have read the post right through instead of lurching into some righteous indignation, but that's not how PH generally works. smile

Well they aren't doing mine. I'm paying £145 for something which worked as good as new yesterday.

Maybe its due to mine being newer.. ormaybe its the fact that the blue ray failure seems to be quite common ?

If you like I'll PM you my details and you can try the 'You fixed it for this bloke why not me approach .. ' . Though I'd better wait till Ive got mine back and repaired before I do smile
